Jack S. Zuckert, a former Milwaukeean and one of the founding members of Congregation Shalom, died in Boynton Beach, Fla., of a heart attack on Feb. 25. He was 78.
He was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity. He served as an Army Air Force navigator and bombardier in Europe during World War II.
He worked in the insurance industry and retired as a certified life underwriter and director of training for New York Life Insurance Co. in Milwaukee.
According to his family, his special interests included current events, Judaism, sports and the great World War II British prime minister Winston Churchill. He also was named “volunteer of the year” in 1999 by Literacy Services of Wisconsin.
He moved to Florida about five years ago. His daughters wrote that “We miss his patience, kindness, intelligent insights and gentle humor.”
He is survived by his second wife, Joy (formerly Marks); daughters Abby (Jim) Susman of St. Louis and Laura (Scott Rosen) Zuckert of Northbrook, Ill.; step-sons Robert Marks of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and John (Ruth) Marks of Deerfield, Ill.; sister Sylvia Grossman of Fox Point; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Faythe (nee Peckarsky) in 1970, and daughter Wendy Zuckert in 1959.
Funeral services and burial were held in Florida on Feb. 29.
