Longtime Milwaukee resident Jack Pelman died of cancer Oct.17. He was 80.
A native of Poland, he was imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II and was one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust, according to his family. Following liberation, the Red Cross sent him to Switzerland where he made lifelong friends, they said.
In 1948, he fought for the independence of the new state of Israel, but after discovering that his brother and sister had also survived the Holocaust and were living in Milwaukee, he immigrated here.
Preceded in death by his brother, Perec Pelman, he is survived by his sister, Bluma Weinstock of Milwaukee.
Rabbi Michel Twerski officiated at funeral services Oct. 18. Burial was in Agudas Achim Cemetery.
Memorials to the Pincus and Bluma Weinstock Holocaust Endowment Fund at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center would be appreciated by the family.
