Jack (Jacob) Lerman

Milwaukee native Jack (Jacob) Lerman died Feb. 7 in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 86.
He was the owner of Lerman Tire Service here and was active in the National Tire Dealers Association. In addition, he was instrumental in getting state legislation passed to protect the rights of small business owners.

He was a past president of the Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning. After moving to Tucson in 1980, he became a volunteer for Jewish Family and Children’s Service, working to help Russian immigrants acclimate to life in the United States.

He also was involved with the University of Arizona. He was a member of HABBJACH, an organization that raises funds for scholarships to the university for needy high school students. He also volunteered at the campus Hillel Foundation. In addition, he served as a volunteer in the mediation program established by Arizona’s attorney general.

“Assisting others in need was the guiding principle of his life,” according to his family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernadine; daughters Sharon (Barry Mates) Chaimson and Judith Lerman, both of Tucson, and Sheina Lerman of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 10 in Tucson.

The family would appreciate memorial donations to HABBJACH, 6491 N. Paseo Otono, Tucson, AZ 85750; or to the Tucson Medical Center Hospice.
