Former Milwaukee resident Irwin William Zeiger died on Feb. 27. at the age of 97.
Born in Brooklyn, Zeiger lived in Milwaukee from 1919 to 1942. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1930 with a degree in journalism.
For 22 years, he worked for the Central Motor Freight Association in Chicago as editor of its monthly magazine, Illinois Truck News. He was also one of the founders of the American Truck Historical Society and wrote two articles in its publication, “Wheels of Time.”
After moving to Leisure World in Seal Beach, Calif., in 1979, he eventually became president of Leisure World’s Mutual Eleven board of directors and secretary of Leisure World’s Golden Rain board of directors. He was also president of the local B’nai Brith International chapter.
According to his family, he enjoyed travel, bridge, classical music, baseball, tennis and local government.
Wife Bertha Sigunick Zeiger preceded him in death in 2003. He is survived by daughters Mimi Zeiger of San Francisco and Elaine Zeiger of Chicago; sons Bill (Victoria Moore) Zeiger of New Castle, Penn., and Jerry (Marlene Suggs) of Oakland, Calif.; sister Norma Weisfeld of Delray Beach, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
