IEC campaign, other efforts continue to support Israel

As donations continue to pour into the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, which is coordinating the local Israel Emergency Campaign in support of Israel, other communities and organizations are also responding to the crisis.

In Appleton, Moses Montefiore Synagogue, in a letter to all congregants, is urging its members to stand with Israel. “Give … like you’ve never given before. NOW,” writes the Fox Valley UJC Committee, which is chaired by Earle H. Sherrod, with Bruce Chudacoff as honorary chairman and Jen Rusky as treasurer.

As in Milwaukee, funds raised in the Fox Valley will be channeled to the IEC, which was launched five weeks ago by the United Jewish Communities, the umbrella organization of North American Jewish federations, to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to support Israel’s security, trauma and medical needs.

“We’ve just started our campaign,” said Sherrod in a telephone interview last week, “and we will follow up with some coffees and speakers from UJC. We’re also going to be in contact with an ecumenical group in town and see if they’re interested in helping us as well. They have been supportive of Israel in the past.”

Further, Israel Bonds has launched an intensive 60-day national campaign to secure $200 million in emergency funds for Israel’s economy.

This would be an accelerated installment of the $1.25 billion Israel has asked the Bonds organization to provide in 2002, according to Irwin Hochberg, national campaign chair.
He added, “This two-month effort will focus on letting Israelis know we support them in every way — economically, morally and spiritually.”

The campaign, to close June 25, will consist of three components: securing unpaid commitments; obtaining purchases from individuals who have not yet invested in bonds this year; and encouraging 2002 purchasers to make an additional investment.
