Community supporter Ida Grossman (nee Chester) died at Ruth Hospice on Jan. 1 of complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born outside Rumsey, Alberta, Canada, where her parents and grandparents were homesteaders. She grew up in Chicago and moved to Milwaukee in 1948 after her marriage to Fred Grossman. He died in 1992.
A homemaker, she was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and a life member of its Sisterhood. She was active in numerous service organizations including, Women’s American ORT, where she was honor roll chairman for the Northpoint chapter; Hadassah; Na’amat-USA; B’nai B’rith; and the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism.
Further, she was a charter member of Common Cause and a supporter of the Jewish National Fund.
According to her family, “She was known for her warmth and hospitality. An avid baseball fan, she enjoyed making crafts, playing tennis and had a keen interest in politics and current events.”
She is survived by son Robert Grossman of Santa Monica, Calif., and daughter Linda Grossman of Chicago.
Rabbi Paul Kerbel conducted funeral services on Jan. 4. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
Memorials to Women’s American ORT were suggested.
