Hyman Cohen

Longtime Milwaukeean Hyman Cohen died Nov. 21 in San Antonio, Texas. He was 95.

The youngest of 12 children, he was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and arrived in Milwaukee at the age of 3. According to his family, his father’s death forced him to work full-time at age 14 to support his mother. He worked for Gimbels Department Store for 47 years, primarily as a “very accomplished” salesman of men’s clothing, his family said.

He was a member of Congregation Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel. In 1989, he moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where he was active in community affairs. He relocated to San Antonio in 2004.

“He was a man who possessed an extraordinary wit, sense of humor and outgoing personality that endeared him to everyone who knew him [or] met him,” said his son, Norman (Barbara) Cohen of Milwaukee.

In addition, he is survived by his wife Lena (nee Seitz) Cohen of San Antonio; son Gerald (Ruth) Cohen of Portland, Ore.; daughter Ellen (David) Ziger of San Antonio; and seven grandchildren.

Rabbi Leonardo Bitron officiated at funeral services Nov. 23. Burial was in Agudas Achim Memorial Gardens in San Antonio.
