Native Milwaukeean Howard Melvin Schudson died on July 29 at the age of 89.
He grew up in Shorewood and Whitefish Bay, and was president of the first graduating class of Whitefish Bay High School in 1934, according to his family. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938. He entered graduate school at Northwestern University, but his studies were interrupted by World War II in 1939.
He served as a major in the Army Air Force in the India-Burma theatre during World War II. And, according to his family, he was awarded the Bronze Star for directing the “Eastern Air Command Weekly Intelligence Summary.”
In 1946, after returning to Milwaukee, he founded Crown Prince, Inc., a company specializing in sports-related custom printing. He served as CEO of Crown Prince and Personalized Pro Shops until 1981. He was also president of the Bowling and Billiard Institute of America.
In retirement, he established a program at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. to assist graduating business students with resume and interview preparation. He volunteered with the American Heart Association and the Children’s Outing Association.
He was a member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun.
He was preceded in death by wife Lorraine (Spira) Schudson and son Howard M. Schudson, Jr.
He is survived by wife Mona (Dizon) Schudson; sons Michael (Suzie) Schudson of San Diego, Calif., and Charles (Karen) Schudson of Shorewood; stepsons Stephen (Tracie) Engel of St. Louis, Mo., and Thomas (Cathy) Engel of San Diego, Calif.; sister Audrey (Robert) Stern of Glencoe, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Rabbi Marc Berkson and Cantor David Barash officiated at funeral services Aug. 3. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
