Former physics instructor in Sheboygan and Milwaukee Haym Kruglak, Ph.D., died of heart failure June 15 in Kalamazoo, Mich. He was 94.
He was born in Ukraine and came to Wisconsin in 1927 from France to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He graduated cum laude with a double major in physics and mathematics. He also received his master’s degree there.
He began his professional career as a physics instructor at Sheboygan High School and later taught physics and mathematics at the Milwaukee Area Community College.
He lived in Wisconsin from 1927 until 1946. He then attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Ph.D. in physics in 1951. He became a curriculum supervisor and taught physics to the Army and Navy Reserve Cadet Program at Princeton University.
He joined the faculty at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in 1954 and retired in 1977, the year he won the distinguished service citation from the American Association of Physics Teachers for excellence in teaching. He wrote more than 100 journal articles and three books.
Throughout his career, he received many professional awards. In 1998, he received UW’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
He is survived by daughter Joyce Kruglak of Springfield. Mo. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lee Kruglak, who died in 2001, and son David Kruglak, who died in 1993.
Services and burial were held June 18 at Jewish Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo.
