Fox Point board approves Sinai expansion project

The Fox Point village board on Tuesday unanimously approved Congregation Sinai’s application to be allowed to renovate and expand the Reform synagogue’s building.

Now the synagogue has to apply for building permits and get approval from the village’s building inspector and building board, according to synagogue representative John D. Mann and project architect Patrick R. Jones.

Mann said construction should begin in mid-October “after Yom Kippur,” and should be finished “before the High Holidays next year.”

The building, located at 8223 N. Port Washington Rd., was constructed around 1960 and has not had an addition since then, Mann told the village trustees.

The plans are intended to “enhance services” that the congregation offers and make the building more accessible to physically challenged people, but not to increase the membership, he said.

Plans call for addition of a library, classrooms, storage areas, office spaces, a new chapel and an addition to the foyer.

The village board held a public hearing before its vote, but only one person spoke to ask a question about parking. Trustees also expressed some concerns about the location of the synagogue’s air conditioning unit and the height of the lights in the parking lot, which apparently are taller than village code allows.

Mann said the synagogue would meet all the village code requirements; and the board amended the motion to approve the plans subject to their conforming with village ordinances.
