Films will have local premieres at Fourth Jewish Film Festival

Seven films about Jewish life, all Milwaukee premieres, will be featured at the Fourth Annual Milwaukee Jewish Film Festival, Dec. 2-6 at the Marcus North Shore Cinema, 11700 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon.

The festival is a program of the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

The festival begins at 7 p.m. with “Trailers Schmailers,” a feature-length compilation of trailers for films either highlighting Jewish stars or about Jewish subjects. They range from the Marx Brothers’ movies to “Schindler’s List,” and together constitute a glimpse of the history of Jews in American cinema.

With it will be shown “Obsessed with Jews,” a short documentary about Neil Keller’s collection of memorabilia of famous Jews. Jody Hirsh, director of Judaic education at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, will introduce the films and lead a talk-back after.

On Dec. 3, 7:30 p.m., the festival will show the Holocaust documentary “Children From the Abyss” with an introduction and talk-back by co-producer Anya Verkhovskaya.

On Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m., the feature will be the French comedy “Dad on the Run,” paired with a second showing of “Obsessed with Jews.”

Two Israeli films will be shown on Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m.: “Grandma Operation,” a comedy that won the Israeli Academy Award for Best TV Drama; and “Rita,” a documentary about a popular Israeli singer. These screenings are co-sponsored by the Israel Resource Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest.

The festival will conclude on Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m., with two films about Jewish musicians. “Jazzman from the Gulag” tells the story of Russian Jewish jazz trumpeter Eddie Rosner.

“Isa Kremer: The People’s Diva” presents the biography of the virtually forgotten opera and folk singer who was the first woman to bring Yiddish songs to the world’s concert stages. The co-executive producers of this film, Louis Barr and Maya Friedler, will conduct a talk-back after the screening.

Tickets for individual showings are $7 general admission, $6 for seniors and students; and a five-movie pass is available for $30 general admission, $25 for students and seniors. Tickets and passes may be purchased through the JCC. For more information, call 414-967-8235 or 414-967-8233.
