Esther Mantel Cohen

Esther Cohen, nee Mantel, a native Milwaukeean, died in Los Angeles on Aug. 3, at the age of 91.

Esther, one of six sisters known as the “Mantel Girls,” grew up in Milwaukee. In the 1940s, the family moved to Los Angeles. She “will be remembered for her love of life, her love for her family and for her sweet smiling face and loving ways,” her family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Sam, on July 5. She is survived by her twin sister Edythe Merkow of Tarzana, Calif.; sisters Sara Mazur, Mary Davis, Millie (Milt) Kaplan and Roz Coleman of Milwaukee; son Larry (Paulette) Cohen and daughters Sharon (Robert) Wiviott and Faye (Gary) Waldman, all of Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

Memorials to the Mantel Sisters Family Fund To Assist Women in Crisis — a restricted fund that the Jewish Community Foundation holds for the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center — would be appreciated by the family.
