Milwaukee native Edward Soref died of respiratory failure on Dec. 29 at the age of 85.
He graduated from Washington High School and Marquette University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1943. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers for three years following his graduation from college.
According to his family, he worked with welding and metal fabrication for most of his career at Allis Chalmers, Aqua-Chem and Lakeside Bridge and Steel and, after retirement, as an independent consultant. He also taught at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
He served as an officer in the Milwaukee chapter of the American Welding Society, held several patents, published articles in professional journals and served on the editorial board of Welding Design and Fabrication, an industry publication, for many years.
In addition, he won awards including second place in the Lincoln Arc Welding competition in 1963, an award for developing a universal clamp and recognition as the nation’s certified welding inspector of the year.
He was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue, Congregation Anshai Lebowitz and Jewish War Veterans, Milwaukee chapter, serving a term as its elected commander. “Edward was devoted to his family and proud of his grandchildren,” his family said.
He is survived by wife Isabelle, nee Spector; son Michael (Alexandra Wright) of Madison; daughter Rosalyn (David Smith) of Rockville, Md.; brother Jerome of Milwaukee; and four grandchildren.
Rabbi Bernard Reichman officiated at funeral services Jan. 1. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorials to Congregation Anshai Lebowitz would be appreciated by the family.
