Funeral services were conducted by Rabbi Michel Twerski on May 23 for Clara Rose Cohn (nee Baranow). She died at the Jewish Home and Care Center on May 20 of complications of age. She was 99.
She came to America from Russia with her family when she was three years old.
As a young girl, she was a friend of Golda Meir, who was her Sunday School teacher and mentor. A trip to Israel when she was in her late 60s fulfilled her life-long dream.
After graduating from high school, she was a buyer in the stationary department at Gimbel’s Department Store.
In 1924, she married Ben Cohn, who died in 1961.
A member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and its Sisterhood since 1937, she was instrumental in organizing and running its gift shop for many years. For her dedicated service, she was honored as a Woman of Valor by the synagogue.
She also belonged to Hadassah and Women’s American ORT, and supported the Jewish Sheltering Home.
In addition to volunteer work, she enjoyed playing mah jong, cooking and knitting. Her grandchildren claim her homemade gefilte fish was the best ever.
Her family recalled that her home was always open and her table always set for every holiday and occasion — and everyone always left with a “care package.”
She is survived by sons Dr. Irving (Sarene) Cohn of Mequon and Dr. Perry (Bobbie) Cohn of Bayside; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel Cemetery.
