Longtime Madison resident Claire Swartz (nee Feit) died May 26 at the age of 76.
She was born in New York City and worked as a secretary for the U.S. Navy Department in New York during World War II. After the war, she moved to Madison, where she met her husband, Alexander Swartz. They married in 1948.
She and her husband were active members of Beth Israel Center. She also belonged to the Women’s International League and Hadassah, and was a dedicated volunteer at the University of Wisconsin Hospital gift shop. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting and other needle arts.
Survivors include her husband; daughters Susan (David) Fish of Seattle and Judith (Joel) Marcus of Spring Green; and two grandchildren.
Rabbi Kenneth Katz officiated at the funeral on May 27 in Madison.
Memorial contributions to Beth Israel Center, Women’s League International, Hadassah or the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center would be appreciated by the family.
