Holocaust survivor Charlotte Weiss died on March 22. She was 96.
Born in Trnava, Slovakia, she cared for her mother until the Holocaust, but under the Nazi regime was forced to find refuge with a Christian family who hid her, saving her life.
After the war, she married Ted Weiss, her partner for 57 years who died 45 days prior to Charlotte’s death. They lived in Israel for three years and then came to Milwaukee to be reunited with remaining family members.
A former member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, Weiss was “an excellent cook and homemaker” according to her family. She loved her home, gardening and was interested in the world. An avid reader, she shared her stories about her life before the Holocaust. Many of the books she read reminded her of her own life, and she often said, “I could have written that.”
Weiss is survived by son Thomas (Esther) Weiss of Mequon; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the graveside service in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to Congregation Shalom would be appreciated by the family.
