Belle Spitz

Belle Spitz (nee Himmelreich) of Madison died Oct. 17 of heart failure. She was 91.
Born in Milwaukee, she graduated from North Division High School. She lived in Milwaukee with her husband Julius Spitz for more than 50 years.

She worked for Weight Watchers as a bookkeeper for many years, according to her family.

A founding member of Congregation Shalom in Milwaukee, she later became a member of Temple Beth El in Madison.

Her family said that she lived independently at the Coventry in Madison, near her sons and their families, for the last five years. She made many new friends, played bridge, participated in Jewish Social Services Shabbats and joined the book club there. She was an avid reader and “always looked forward to her issue of the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle,” her family said.

Preceded in death by her husband, Julius, in 1990, she is survived by sons William (Barbara) Spitz and Michael (Susan) Spitz, both of Madison; brother Dr. Joseph (Barbara) Himes, of Bayside; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at graveside services at Spring Hill Cemetery, Milwaukee, on Oct. 20.

Memorials to Jewish Social Services, 6434 Enterprise Ln., Madison, WI 53719, or Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Dr., Madison, WI 53711, would be appreciated by the family.
