During a Dec. 1 meeting, the Bayside Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved the development agreement and conditional use permit allowing The Shul to construct the congregation’s new building.
The approval was made with the addition of a contingency that will assign an 11 p.m. end-time to events of a non-religious nature that take place at the building, as part of the 12 permitted events during the year during which the The Shul’s hours of operation may be extended beyond 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Rabbi Shmaya Shmotkin, spiritual leader of the Chabad Lubavitch congregation was “pleased” by the approval.
“We know that the building that will be built will be a center of light and warmth for the entire community,” he said. “We are very confident that it will be something that will enhance the Jewish community and Bayside at large.”
The site of the new Shul building is on Rexleigh Dr. and Pelham Parkway, where three single-family residential houses now stand. The Shul is currently located in the Audubon Court shopping center on the corner of Brown Deer and Port Washington roads.
Shmotkin said he was not sure when the next steps in the building process will take place.
“Up to this point, it was difficult to deal with the specifics” of the project, Shmotkin said, but “now that we’ve gotten the approvals,” Shul officials can now address the issues of scheduling, size and cost for the new building. MORE STORIES
