Professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Abraham Spitzbart died July 6 of cancer in San Diego. He was 86.
The New York native came to Milwaukee in 1946 after earning a bachelor’s degree at City College of New York and a doctorate in mathematics at Harvard University.
He taught at UWM for 40 years and was the author of several college-level math books. He was a member of the American Mathematics Association.
A resident of Glendale, he belonged to Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Spitzbart (nee Katz); son Don Spitzbart; daughter Gail Skoglund; sister Bella Miller of New York; and two grandchildren.
Services and burial were held July 8 in San Diego.
