2008’s first Jewish baby arrives January 1

Naomi Sarai Askenazi, the winner of The Chronicle’s “First Jewish Baby” contest for 2008, made her appearance at 9:49 p.m. on the first day of the year.

Born to Sofi and Abraham Askenazi of Shorewood, at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee, Naomi is the Askenazi’s second child. She is sister to Nathan, 4, who attends Jewish Beginnings Lubavitch Preschool.

“He’s been very sweet to her,” said mother Sofi. “He wants to touch her and kiss her and know what she is doing all the time.”

Naomi, whose Hebrew name is Sara, has a lot of dark hair and almond-shaped eyes, according to her mother. “She is a little bit of a screamer, but she is content when she gets what she needs,” she said.

[Naomi’s] sleeping schedule is “a little inverted,” she said, but otherwise she is doing well.

Sofi, 36, and Abraham, 38, both natives of Mexico City, attended the same school and knew each other as children, Sofi said. But Abraham and his family moved to California when he was 14.

Sofi left Mexico to attend the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where she earned a degree in art. Abraham studied at the University of California-Berkeley where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. They reconnected in their 20s, while he was visiting Mexico City.

Sofi, who has been studying dance since she was 5, started teaching dance when the couple moved to Burlington to be near Abraham’s work at Buell, a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson that is located in East Troy.

In 2001, they moved to Milwaukee to be closer to a Jewish community.

Sofi earned a master’s degree in dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is currently on leave from teaching at the Milwaukee Ballet School.

The baby’s maternal grandparents are Max and Jane Tenenbaum of Mexico City. Eduardo Askenazi and Paz Cohen of Mexico City are the paternal grandparents. Raquel Kluchnik of Pembroke Pines, Fla., is the maternal great-grandmother.

The baby is named in memory of her maternal great-grandmother, Sara Tenenbaum. "
