Lynne Gail Goldstein died April 18, 2026. Born Leah Gedaliah bat Yosef and Necha on Sept. 18, 1950 / 7 Cheshvan 5711, in Hammond, Indiana, across the street from the local elementary school. Her beloved father, Joe Goldstein, died when she was young, and she grew up with her mother, Norma; older siblings, Phyllis and Irving; and her maternal grandmother, Bubbie. Lynne’s marriage in 1981 to Jonathan Schneider was a loving and complete partnership in every way until tragically cut short by Jon’s death in 1997. Lynne maintained close family relationships to her aunts, uncles and cousins in Hammond, Chicago and New York. Her family members, over three generations, knew they could count on Lynne’s deep interest in their lives and on her generous love and support.

After graduating high school, Lynne earned her bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from Beloit College in 1971, majoring in archaeology. Her commitment to this field of study began even earlier in her high school days through volunteer work at the Field Museum of Natural History and participation in the Kampsville Project. She completed her master of arts and doctoral degree from Northwestern University (in 1973 and 1976, respectively). Over the course of her career, she taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1976-1996) and Michigan State University (1996-2018), and also chaired both departments, honored with emeritus status upon her retirement. After retiring to her beloved Arizona, where she enjoyed posting photos of so many beautiful views and sunsets, Lynne continued to be very active in the world of archaeology, adding to her already highly distinguished career, which included many publications and awards, including five Presidential Recognition Awards, and her excellent mentorship to countless students and colleagues. She served as the editor of American Antiquity, the publication of the Society for American Archaeology and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society.

Her colleagues have noted her intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm when exploring new research projects. She was also noted for her clear-sightedness, straightforwardness and keen sense of humor, which she brought to every relationship and situation.

Her family and friends, her many students and her esteemed colleagues as well as the field of American archaeology itself, all have greatly benefited from Lynne’s curiosity, intellectual honesty, enthusiasm, wit and generosity. She will be greatly missed by many.

Dr. Morton M. Soifer

Dr. Morton M. Soifer

Dr. Morton M. Soifer, beloved husband, father, grandfather and physician, died peacefully on April 17, 2026, at St. John’s on the Lake in Milwaukee. He was 90 years old.

Born in 1935 in Providence, Rhode Island, Mort demonstrated an early dedication to learning and service that would define his life. He earned his undergraduate degree from Providence College in 1957, followed by his medical degree from Tufts Medical School in 1961.

Mort’s pediatric residency in Albany, New York, began in 1962, pausing between 1963 and 1965 while he served as a physician in the United States Navy Medical Corps, stationed at China Lake, California. He returned to Providence after his service, completed his residency, and went on to practice pediatrics in Bristol, Rhode Island, from 1965 to 1967.

With deeper curiosity in pediatrics, Mort turned his talents to medical research, joining Ross Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio, from 1967 to 1971, where he conducted research on foods and infant nutrition. In 1971, he again changed direction and brought his family to Milwaukee, where he built a distinguished pediatric allergy and immunology practice, Allergy Associates. He practiced there for more than three decades before retiring in 2003.

Mort was a wonderfully complex man. He was unfailingly precise, and that same attention to detail flowed into the way he loved people: thoroughly, reliably and without half-measure. In 1959, Mort married Naomi Fershtman, and together they built a life that spanned every kind of adventure, including travel, career and a growing family. By any measure, it was a beautiful life. By Mort’s own measure, his family was his proudest work.

He is survived by Naomi, his wife of 67 years; his sister, Ann Winograd; his sons, Jonathan Soifer and his wife, Kristin; Jeffrey Soifer and his wife, Ellen Peters; his grandchildren, Max Soifer and his wife, Stephanie; Anna Soifer; Lenna Shapiro and her husband, Evan; Lydia Soifer; Rebecca Soifer; and his great-granddaughter, Georgene Shapiro.
