Zelma Schloss

Zelma Schloss of Menomonee Falls died April 2, 2025, at the age of 91.  She lived a fulfilling and happy life before she was called to her next home to join many deceased loved ones and friends.

Zelma was born on January 1, 1934, as the first new baby of the new year in Rockford, Illinois — something she was sure to tell many of the new people she met or repeat to those who already knew it over the years. She went on to touch the lives of many people with her quick laugh and smile, enthusiasm, love and unwavering spirit. Zelma was quite the doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a highly devoted relative and friend to many.

Zelma is survived by her husband of 68-and-a-half years, Manfred; her brother, Chuck Fine; and two daughters who were always committed to their mother: Cindy (Rick) Memmel (nee Schloss) and Judy (Jeff) Stagl (nee Schloss). She also is survived by her cherished grandchildren, Scott Memmel; Eric Memmel (who will be marrying Becca Kaja on May 25); Kevin (Rachel) Stagl; and Michael (Lauren) Stagl. In addition, Zelma is survived by two great-grandchildren she loved to spend time with as often as possible: Olivia and Isabelle Stagl (Kevin). And she would have been sure to enjoy her third great-grandchild, who is expected to enter Michael’s and Lauren’s life in early September. Zelma also will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, David and Henrietta Fine; in-laws Karl and Frieda Schloss; brother, Paul and sister-in-law, Miriam Fine; sister-in-law, Penny Fine; brother- and sister-in-law, Melvin and Alice Clark; and brother- and sister-in-law, Henry and Edith Berlin.

After living a short time in Rockford, Zelma and her family moved to Broadhead, Wisconsin, and then to Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where she grew up with her brothers, Chuck and Paul. She graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1951 and regularly attended high-school reunions over the next 65-plus years.

Zelma moved to Milwaukee after high school and lived with Mae Temkin. In 1953, she met the person who turned out to be the love of her life, Manfred. While he was serving in the Army and stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, Zelma moved to Washington, D.C., in 1954 and worked at the Library of Congress. Manfred would spend his furlough time with her there. Zelma and Manfred moved back to Milwaukee in 1956 and were married in Madison, Wisconsin, on August 12, 1956. They started their family in 1959 by welcoming daughter Cindy and added daughter Judy in 1961.

After living in their comfortable home on North 75th Street in Milwaukee for more than 30 years, they moved to Menomonee Falls in 1997. Zelma was a longtime homemaker and soap opera fanatic. She was also a dedicated volunteer for many decades. She volunteered for the Milwaukee Health Department for 50 years, the Blood Center of Wisconsin (now Versiti) for 11 years and the Milwaukee Public Schools for a number of years. She also assisted Manfred with Meals on Wheels deliveries to the elderly and needy for 15 years.

There was one thing Zelma absolutely despised — dairy products, especially milk and butter, yet she loved her ice cream — but there was a more important thing she absolutely loved: others. She was loved and admired by the many people who knew her because of her high interest in others. Zelma was always very caring, compassionate, loving and friendly.

We will miss you mom, grandma and grammy (some of the many endearing names she earned)! Also missing her will be the amazing and caring staff of Rent-A-Daughter and Theresa Tanner, who assisted Zelma so wonderfully with her day-to-day needs in recent years. Zelma’s family salutes their efforts, devotion and loving touch.

Graveside funeral service held April 8 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Milwaukee.  The family asks that donations be made in Zelma’s memory to A Living Tribute (to support tree planting in national forests), Versiti (to support their blood donation efforts) or a worthy charity of one’s choosing (to support their causes).
