Jodi Habush Sinykin, a Democrat, is running for state Senate in District 8, which includes much of the Milwaukee area’s North Shore. She is running against state Sen. Duey Stroebel.
She has served on the boards of several community organizations, including Milwaukee Jewish Day School, Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, Jewish Family Services, and the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, among others. With HERC, Habush Sinykin advocated for the law, passed in April 2021, that mandates Holocaust education in Wisconsin schools.
Habush Sinykin served as co-chair of Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Israel Emergency Fund, launched after the attacks of Oct. 7.
Habush Sinykin grew up in Fox Point and attended Nicolet High School, University of Michigan and Harvard Law School. She has taught at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences and served as a lawyer at Habush Habush & Rottier.
Asked about antisemitism, Habush Sinykin said: “Antisemitism must be addressed through ongoing education efforts, together with intelligent campus policies that ensure Jewish students have the opportunity to live and learn in a safe campus environment. Unfortunately, UWM is still not doing enough to appropriately gauge when free speech is curtailing the safety and freedom of others, leaving Jewish students and professors to deal with daily ugliness and disruption.”
