Congregation Shalom’s Tikkun Shabbat 

Congregation Shalom will be hosting its second annual Tikkun Olam Shabbat on Friday, May 19. 

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a “green” Oneg Shabat that features speaker Meenal Atre, an advocate for plastic-free communities.  

Meenal Atre, the co-founder of Plastic Free MKE, is an advocate for reduced reliance on plastics. Her accomplishments include switching Milwaukee public libraries to phenol-free receipts and adopting the Boomerang Bags project in Milwaukee, according to Congregation Shalom.  

During the Oneg Shabbat, participants will be able to partake in food and conversation with multiple experts at “green” resource tables. Invited guests for the Oneg Shabbat includes Plastic Free MKE, Green Homeowners United, Tikkun Ha Ir, Milwaukee Jewish Free Loan Association, Outpost Cooperative, Green Life Trading Company and MMSD.

Congregation Shalom and Amilinida   

Congregation Shalom hosted its second seder for Passover on April 6. According to Congregation Shalom the Seder was successful with an attendance of 190 guests. 

The seder meal was prepared by Chef Greg Leon, owner of Amilinda’s restaurant, who was a 2022 James Beard Best Chef Midwest Finalist. He is also a finalist for the 2023 James Beard Best Chef Midwest award.   

 

Rabbi Dinin leaving Lake Park Synagogue  

Rabbi Joel Dinin of Lake Park Synagogue has announced that he will be leaving Milwaukee. Rabbi Dinin is moving to Boston where he will begin a new position at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Hillel as their Orthodox rabbi and director of education. 

Dinin, originally from West Hills, California, received semikha from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah in New York. During his time at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, he served as the rabbinic intern at Congregation Beth Tefillah in New Jersey and The Roslyn Synagogue in Long Island. His first position as rabbi was at Moses Montefiore Anshe in Baltimore. He then moved to be the head rabbi at Lake Park Synagogue, member of the Wisconsin Board of Rabbis, and teacher of Israel Studies at Bader Hillel Academy. 

Rabbi Dinin will be moving in July with his wife, Sarah, and their three children, Michael, Meira, and Jacob.
