Milwaukee Yom HaShoah commemoration slated for April 17

The annual community event to commemorate the Holocaust is scheduled for erev Yom HaShoah, Monday, April 17, 2023, 6 p.m., at a time of rising antisemitism. You may RSVP at MilwaukeeJewish.org/Yamim.

“As antisemitism continues to increase in Wisconsin, across the U.S. and around the world, coming together to commemorate Yom HaShoah, to remember where hate leads is an incredibly powerful statement for us to make as a community,” said Samantha Abramson, executive director of the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, a program of Milwaukee Jewish Federation. National and local organizations, including HERC, have documented the rise in intolerance.

The April 17 event is a project of Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, Milwaukee Jewish Federation and HERC. Attend at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center -Daniel M. Soref Community Hall, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Whitefish Bay If you have questions, contact MichaelM@MilwaukeeJewish.org or 414-963-2716. The community event co-chairs are Amy Shapiro and Leo Kleiner. There is no charge to attend.

Claire Boren is a Holocaust survivor from New Jersey, and an artist, and is coming to town to speak at the event.

“One thing that is very interesting about Claire Boren, is the fact that she’s not only an artist, but she talks about how her Holocaust experience has influenced her art,” said Michael Morris, the community engagement manager for HERC. At one point, Boren started to notice the influence of the Holocaust in her own art.

The event will include images of her hometown in Europe and her art, with Boren appearing in person.

Also at the commemoration, the Milwaukee Jewish Day School choir is to perform. Local rabbis and cantors are to participate, and a candle lighting is to include local survivors and grandchildren of survivors.
