Ovation renovating new wing – Kavod Terrace to provide safe, enriching living for those with memory loss

Some in the community facing memory issues will soon have a new place to call home, with a fireplace, bistro, a sun-baked gathering area, new technology, and more. Construction is underway.

Ovation Communities is renovating a wing in its east side campus to open a community-based residential facility for memory care, with 16 rooms for residents. Dubbed Kavod Terrace, the wing is expected to open in late fall, according to the vice president of development, Tanya Mazor-Posner.

The project is a multi-million dollar one, funded by tax-exempt bonding and donor support, said Michael Sattell, president and CEO of Ovation Communities.

The Kavod Terrace, 1410 N. Prospect Ave., will cater to the specific needs of memory care patients who do not require 24-hour nursing assistance. The facility is, however, intended to provide a safe and secure environment, with kosher grab-and-go and sit-down dining options.

“We’re going to have a whole smartboard setup right on this wall with different kinds of touch screen, interactive programs, specifically for residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia,” Mazor-Posner said, during a tour of construction.

In addition to new technology, the Kavod Terrace will incorporate new design features to better suit memory care patients. Ovation Communities commissioned local artist Tony Spolar to color-code doorways with his resin art. The colors in the doorway panels belong to different color families to assist memory patients with finding their way.

Dementia specialists and licensed music and art therapists will be part of Kavod Terrace efforts.

Kavod Terrace will provide “a sensory stimulative environment where loved ones living with memory loss are enriched by music and the arts, while living in a safe and nurturing home,” Sattell said.

“Kavod,” in fact, is Hebrew for “honor and respect.”
