Heroes of Humanity

‘The Lesson’ 

Join the Israel Center of Milwaukee Jewish Federation for a screening of the award-winning Israeli TV drama “The Lesson.” Highlighting a politically charged learning environment in Israel, this series navigates the complex world of facts, opinions and beliefs, and how these conversations permeate all aspects of our lives, including our children’s education. Participants will watch the first two episodes in a six-part series and then discuss how the story relates to local issues here in the United States. Photography Exhibit 

Join the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC’s Tapestry program for the opening event of the Robert Oppenheim photography exhibit in the Surlowe Promenade in the Marcus Pavilion. After escaping Nazi Germany and coming to Milwaukee, Robert Oppenheim used his ever-present camera to interact with the world around him as he navigated life as an immigrant. His photography captures the unique viewpoint of feeling both a part of the community and alone within it. Oppenheim was an active participant at the JCC, and his daughters and granddaughter will share details of his life in Milwaukee during the event. Free and open to the community. Rosh Hashanah Farmer Market 

Chabad of the East Side will host a Rosh Hashanah Farmer Market at Atwater Park. Kick off the new year with art by local artists, crafting, holiday tasting, delicious holiday challah and pastries for sale by the Friendship Bakery, a Rosh Hashanah sing-along, Judaica, face painting, balloons and more. People of the Vote 

Learn about the Jewish connection to voting and why it matters at a learning discussion, at Lake Park Synagogue. This event will feature guest speaker Rabbi Bonnie Margulis from Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice. Presented by Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee, Lake Park Synagogue and the Wisconsin Interfaith Voter Engagement Campaign. Sept 11. at 10 am. Lake Park Synagogue, 3207 N. Monday, Sept. 12 

Shalom Bollywood 

The Shalom Bollywood documentary tells the story of the lives of nice Jewish girls who became icons at the heart of Indian cinema from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. This screening event will feature a talkback with award-winning producer and director Danny Ben-Moshe. The film screening will be available starting Sept. 12-25. In connection with “Beyond Borders: The Art of Siona Benjamin,” an exhibit on display at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee through Sept. 25, 2022. Free for museum members. $10 for nonmembers. Project Shema 

Join the Jewish Community Relations Council of Milwaukee Jewish Federation for Project Shema, which strives to help bring understanding about the lived realities, history, and challenges facing the Jewish people and how antisemitism has survived, thrived and mutated over thousands of years. Learn from April Powers, managing director of First Impression Rx, who helps companies manage differences through training and diversity and inclusion strategy. A highly rated trainer for Fortune 50 companies, she is also the first chief equity and inclusion officer for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Modern Taste & Milwaukee Tradition 

Join the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC and Chef Michael Solovey in partnership with the Jewish Museum Milwaukee for a unique and in-person cooking class. Jewish Museum Milwaukee Education Director Dan Haumschild will discuss the history behind how Lizzie Kander created the Settlement Cookbook. The Settlement Cookbook took traditional European and Jewish dishes and made them more American and modern.  Chef Michael will take participants through a modern and fresh take on a selection of recipes featured in the cookbook as particpants create delicious food that is both modern, American and traditional. Full series cost: JCC members $75; community participant $85. Individual class cost: JCC members $25; community participant $30. Selichot at CBINT 

“The Songs In My Head This Season: Selichot at CBINT.” Prior to their traditional Selichot service, Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid invites members of the broader community to a kind of musical jam on High Holiday themes: Choose a song from any genre (not from the Mahzor) that “sings” the themes of the High Holidays to you, for example, on forgiveness, starting over, fixing what’s broken, or love. The Beatles’ “We Can Work It Out” comes to mind. Let them know what song you’ve chosen. They’ll cue up the music video, share lyrics, sing, talk and learn. Mickey Mouse & the Holocaust 

Join the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center on a journey through Holocaust memory led by Northwestern professor and author Danny M. Cohen. This interactive experience will focus on a dozen intriguing and puzzling historical photographs that force us to reconsider how we perceive the past. Using only the evidence within each frame, the audience will discover rich paradigms and important lessons for our contemporary world, as well as a surprising connection to pop culture today. Author Event 

Tapestry Arts & Ideas at the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC will invite author Benedetta Jasmine Guetta to discuss her book “Cooking all Giudia.” With a collection of kosher recipes from all regions of Italy, Guetta is on a mission to tell the story of how the Jews changed Italian food and share the extraordinary dishes prepared in the Jewish communities of Italy with home cooks. Her book is the ultimate tribute to the wonderfully rich, yet still largely unknown, culinary heritage of the Jews in Italy. Sept 20 at 7:30 pm. Presented on Zoom and free. Open to the community. Doors open at Jewish Museum 

Doors Open at Jewish Museum Milwaukee. Explore the history of Jewish Milwaukee through the Jewish Museum Milwaukee’s permanent exhibit during Doors Open Milwaukee. The museum features sections on Golda Meir, the Settlement Cookbook and the wall-sized Marc Chagall tapestry “The Prophet Jeremiah.” The museum’s permanent exhibit will be free for Doors Open participants, but admission is required to view the new special exhibit, Beyond Borders: The Art of Siona Benjamin, which explores the life of internationally renowned Indian-Jewish artist Siona Benjamin who explores feelings of inclusion and exclusion through her art.
