Singing for Ukraine
Congregation Emanu-El B’ne will host a Singing for Ukraine concert that will feature three acts including Robin Pluer and Peter Roller, Frogwater and Lil’ Rev with special guests Cantor David Barash and Ella Rose. The concert will raise funds for those affected by the war in Ukraine. Community members can attend in-person or online through a live-stream on CEEBJ’s YouTube channel or Facebook page. Tribe Ride
Join Jewish National Fund Wisconsin for the Tribe Ride that will cover 20 miles of the Oak Leaf Trail. Participants will casually ride to Discovery world and back while learning about the Israel Ride from the Israel Ride and Team JNF Wisconsin captains, Cantor David and Debra Barash. Author Event: Riva Lehrer
The Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC Tapestry program will bring Riva Lehrer to Milwaukee to talk about her book “Golem Girl: A Memoir.” In 1958, Riva Lehrer was born with spina bifida. As an adult, she is invited to join a group of artists who are building Disability Culture. When Riva asks if she can paint their portraits, she invents an intimate and collaborative process that will transform the way she sees herself, others and the world. Hope, Help, Healing Gala
Jewish Family Services will hold its annual Hope, Help and Healing Gala featuring guest speaker LeRoy Butler, retired Green Bay Packer and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2022, Super Bowl XXXI Champion, and inventor of The Lambeau Leap. Funds raised at this event will support services to improve the health, personal wellbeing and level of independence of persons with disabilities, mental health issues, substance use disorders and families with low household incomes. The Art of Siona Benjamin
Celebrate the opening of the newest exhibit at Jewish Museum Milwaukee, “Beyond Borders: The Art of Siona Benjamin.” Raised as a Jew and member of the Bene Israel community in a largely Hindu and Muslim Mumbai, she attended Catholic and Zoroastrian schools before moving to the U.S. Benjamin will address both the artistic and socio-political motivations for her work at the opening exhibit preview. Chalk the Block
Join Jewish Museum Milwaukee for “Chalk The Block,” a family-friendly block party that puts ART at its center. During this event, participants young and old will be provided with simple drawings steeped in Indian imagery to use as templates for their creativity. Trained artists, including Siona Benjamin, the featured artist of the museum’s newest exhibit “Beyond Borders: The Art of Siona Benjamin,” will add inspiration and direction as needed. Participants can come for a short while or stay to watch the community transform a public space into a work of art in four different locations: Jewish Museum Milwaukee, 1360 N. Prospect Ave., Mitchell Street Branch of Milwaukee Public Library, 906 W. Mitchell St., Black Cat Alley – in partnership with East Branch Library, E. Greenfield Summer Institute
Hosted by the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies in Madison, the 2022 Greenfield Summer Institute features historians, social scientists and scholars of religion that will explore the changing nature of Jewish families and their interactions with the larger societies they inhabit. Speakers will discuss wide-ranging subjects as race and diversity in the family context; dating, marriage, and sex in the Orthodox world; the portrayal of Jewish families in film and television; and one extended Jewish family’s role in defeating Nazi forces in North Africa during World War II. This summer institute will offer a richer understanding of the phrase le-Dor va-Dor — from generation to generation. July 11-July 14.
