Cookies for Ukraine: Hillel Milwaukee students baked their way to donations

Even the black and white cookies were not black and white – all the cookies at this table were proudly frosted yellow and blue, the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Hillel Milwaukee students sold $324 worth of cookies in just a few hours on March 15, to benefit the Ukraine efforts of the Hillel International Emergency Relief Fund. Students had baked the cookies the night before.

“When something bad happens in the world, it’s easy to feel helpless, and especially when you don’t have the means to donate to every cause,” said Hillel Milwaukee Outreach Vice President Madison Powell. “As a college student, this is a way that you can take control and be involved without breaking our own bank.”

Passerby students visited the Hillel Milwaukee cookie table repeatedly around lunchtime, at the Student Union of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Students were looking to support the people of Ukraine, which has been under siege, many of its citizens transformed into refugees after a bloody Russian incursion that started Feb. 24, 2022.

Mathew Tulloch, a student studying saxophone performance, stopped to buy a cookie. He gave two reasons for why he stopped, with a smile: “One, supporting the people of Ukraine. Two, cookie!”

Hillel Milwaukee students baked the cookies the night before. “This is really not any specific committee. It’s really just students who want to help in some way,” said Powell, who previously served as Hillel Milwaukee’s student president.

“We’re doing it because we should be doing it, she added, using the Hebrew word for justice. “It’s tzkedek, you know?”
