Tuesday, March 1 

Comedy for Peace 

The Israel Center of Milwaukee Jewish Federation will a lead a series of programs called Month of Dialogue in March that initiate conversations across audiences and faith groups within the general Milwaukee community. The first of this series is a comedic event where Muslim and Jewish stand-up comedians will come together to inspire audiences while making them laugh. Museum of the Jewish People 

Join the Jewish Museum Milwaukee on a virtual tour of new building of ANU – Museum of the Jewish People. The tour will explore one of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s lace collars, a Sephardic megillat Esther from the 12th century, and a modern take on kapparot (or a customary atonement ritual practiced by some Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur). Grandchildren of Survivors 

Grandchildren of Holocaust survivors will meet over the course of four weeks to learn to confidently share their family Holocaust experience. Participants from this program will connect with their family history, meet others with similar family stories, and explore how the Holocaust has shaped their lives, values and perspectives. Participants will have the opportunity to share their family stories with students in the classroom. Hosted by the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center. Friday, March 4 

Fiddler on the Roof 

Whitefish Bay High School Theater will perform “Fiddler on the Roof” as its spring production. Masks are required. Performed multiple dates: March 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 7p.m. and March 6 at 2 p.m. Whitefish Bay High School Auditorium. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Environmental Peace in Middle East 

Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun will launch a three-part series about environmental peace efforts in the Middle East. The guest speaker will be peace activist Dr. David Lehrer who will discuss how Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians are working together to build a more sustainable and peaceful Middle East. Salute to Jewish Educators 

The Coalition for Jewish Learning will honor Milwaukee Jewish educators from all community schools. Recognitions and annual awards will be presented. Due to COVID safety protocols, only educators are allowed to attend in-person. Families and community supporters of Jewish school educators are invited to watch via Zoom. ‘Light of Days’ 

New York Times Bestselling author Judy Batalion will be interviewed by Milwaukee’s Dr. Rachel Baum about her newly published book, The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos. This book tells the remarkable story of the young Jewish women who became resistance fighters against the Nazis during World War II.  The book has been optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture. Registrants have the option to attend virtually or in person. Space is limited for the in-person portion. March 6 at 1:30 p.m. Congregation Shalom, 7630 N. Art4Friendship 

Art4Friendship is a silent auction event that honors the special artists of the Friendship Circle of Wisconsin. Bid on art masterpieces created with love by children and adults with disabilities and other community artists. Intro to LGBTQ belonging 

Led by Jackie Maris of Keshet, teachers will learn how to create an LGBTQ-affirming environment for students, colleagues and the school community at large. This class is the second in a two-part series and will focus on curriculum and representation, culture and language, school policies and interventions into microaggressions and bullying. Debates that shape  

Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid will start an adult education course that explores the heart of Judaism and Jewish life: debates—philosophical, spiritual, ethical and cultural. Each session of Beyond Dispute includes a short video lecture, text study and guided group discussion led by Rabbi Joel Alter. The course features virtual and in person attendance options. Cinema Sabaya 

Join the Israel Center of MJF for an in-person screening followed by a conversation of Jewish and Muslim women. In the film, nine women, Arab and Israeli, take part in a video workshop that will rattle their seemingly contrasting worlds. Free and open to the public. Ablaze: Daniel Kidane 

In partnership with the Milwaukee Art Museum and Jewish Museum Milwaukee, Present Music will premiere a new work commissioned by Daniel Kidane that explores themes of identity. Kidane, whose music draws on his Eritrean and Russian heritage as well as his eclectic London upbringing, will be joined by No-No Boy, a multimedia project by Vietnamese-American artist Julian Saporiti who blends folk storytelling and archival imagery to tell the hidden history of Japanese internment camps in WWII America. Taste and Tradition 

Join the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC’s popular Tapestry series “Taste and Tradition” led by Chef Michael Solovey, Owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. Chef Michael’s pedagogy implements approachable science to help his participants understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen and develop individual culinary instincts. Teen Inclusion Training 

The Teen Inclusion Training program educates and supports 8th-12th graders who work with children and peers with disabilities. Teens learn how to assist in settings like synagogue schools, Friendship Circle of Wisconsin, camps, and youth groups to create an inclusive environment. Workshops are hands-on and interactive. ‘Indecent’ 

Tapestry Arts & Ideas at the JCC and the Milwaukee Chamber Theater will perform “Indecent” by Paula Vogel, which was the first play translated from Yiddish and professionally staged across Europe. It is hailed for its rebuttal of religious hypocrisy and its honest, joyous depiction of a same-sex relationship. This performance is paired with a staged reading of “God of Vengeance” on March 22 and an exhibit about Yiddish Theater. Masks are required. ‘Sand Storm’ 

Join the Israel Center of  MJF for a virtual screening and talkback of the film “Sand Storm” about two Bedouin women who struggle to change unchangeable rules. This talkback will include the director Elite Zexer and actress Ruba Blal. The conversation will simultaneously be in English, Hebrew and Arabic. Free. From Citizen to Enemy Aliens 

Join Michael Jin, Assistant Professor of History and Global Asian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, for a discussion about the wartime mass incarceration of Japanese Americans in the longer history of pervasive anti-Asian xenophobia in the United States. Jin will explore how Japanese Americans negotiated, reclaimed and redefined ideas about home, citizenship, belonging and what it means to be American throughout the 20th century. Antisemitism in Wisconsin 

Join the Jewish Community Relations Council of Milwaukee Jewish Federation for a virtual town hall meeting focused on the state of antisemitism in Wisconsin. ‘Alternative Facts’ 

The Jewish Museum Milwaukee will present a virtual film screening of “ALTERNATIVE FACTS: The Lies of Executive Order 9066.” This film tells the untold story of false information and political influences which led to the World War ll incarceration of Japanese Americans. The film also examines the parallels to the targeting of groups today and similar attempts to abuse the powers of the government. The film will be available to view online March 20 through April 2. Let’s Talk Straight 

As part of its Month of Dialogue series, the Israel Center of MJF will hold a virtual discussion regarding the 2021 viral video “Let’s Talk Straight” where a rap duo consisting of an Israeli and a Palestinian hope to challenge some pre-conceived barriers to reach a mutually beneficial reality. ‘God of Vengeance’ 

Join Tapestry Arts & Ideas at the JCC for a staged reading of the script “God of Vengeance” which was the inspiration behind Paula Vogel’s play, “Indecent.” The play, a mainstay of Yiddish theater since its debut in 1907, is widely known for its frank depictions of sexuality, religious hypocrisy and prostitution. The drama centers on the efforts of Yankl, a brothel owner, and his wife, Sarah, a former prostitute, to find their teenage daughter Rifkele a respectable Jewish husband. Jewish Equity Diversity and Inclusion 

Educators from local Jewish schools will discuss Jewish Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) in the classroom. This second of two classes will be co-taught by Kai Gardner-Mishlove of Jewish Community Relations Council and Tzipi Altman-Shafer of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, both of Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah will kick off a new women’s group, ARKS (ASKT Rosh Khodesh Society), with a presentation by Shira Lankin Sheps. Shira is a photographer, a clinically trained therapist and the author of “Layers: Personal Narratives of Struggle, Resilience, and Growth From Jewish Women.” She is the creator and publisher of The Layers Project Magazine, an online magazine that explores in-depth insights into the challenges and triumphs of the lives of Jewish women. ‘Breaking Bread’ Closing Night of Month of Dialogue 

Join the Israel Center of MJF for a free film screening, its final event in the Month of Dialogue series. The film follows Arab and Jewish chefs in Haifa as they collaborate in the kitchen. Connected through a shared love of food, the chefs unite to celebrate their cultures and the food of their region free from political and religious boundaries. Free and open to the public. Tzippi Moss Author Event 

Hear from Tzippi Moss, author of “Angels & Tahina,” who backpacked the 1000-kilometer Israel Trail to raise funds to find a cure for ALS.
