Fay Edith Colberg
Fay Edith Colberg (nee Zeiger) died on July 26, 2021, in Madison. Fay was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 9, 1925. She was the youngest of the seven children of Regina (nee Zuckerman) and David Zeiger. She attended North Division High School and graduated from the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. In 1950, she married attorney Joseph Colberg. They eventually moved to Fox Point where they raised their two children, Michael and Lisa. Fay worked as a nurse for many years at the Milwaukee Medical Center with Dr. Robert Santilli. Fay and Joe were among the founders of Congregation Shalom. She is survived by her children; Michael, in Hudson, N.Y., and Lisa Flax (Marshall) in Madison, and her grandchildren, Rebecca (Jeremy) Kuehn, Minneapolis, Elliot Flax (Meghan Horihan), Denver, and Rachel Colberg-Parseghian, Hudson, N.Y. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and by her son-in-law, Gene Parseghian. Graveside service was held on July 30 at Mound Zion Cemetery, Brookfield. Rabbi Ron Shapiro officiated. Dr. Jerome “Yiti” Cornfield
Dr. Jerome “Yiti” Cornfield died on Friday, July 16, 2021. He was 93. Born to Minnie (Starr) and Rabbi Maurice Cornfield in Louisville, Kentucky, on Dec. 31, 1928, Jerome was the brother of Rose (Stanley) Sosowsky, Esther (Fred) Wiviott and Asher (predeceased) (Joan); the much beloved husband for 65 years of Rachel Pearl (Katz), devoted father of Joel (Judy Laner), David (Margo Myers), Cindy Zien (Terry) and Marcie (Josh Stubbins), and proud grandfather of Aaron Foster, Ben, Marc and Jonathan Cornfield; Molly, Sophie, Olivia, and Julie Cornfield; Elana, William, Mikaela, and Samuel Zien; and Amelia and Jacob Stubbins; and seven great-grandchildren. Raised in a traditional Jewish home, Jerome held tightly to the Jewish faith, community, and ritual throughout his life. He graduated from North Division High School as the salutatorian at 15 years old and the University of Wisconsin Medical School at 21 years old, as the youngest graduate in the school’s history; a distinction he held for many decades. Upon graduation, Jerome did a rotating internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee, then joined the U.S. Air Force serving with the Far East Air Force in Korea and Japan, rising to the rank of Captain, and serving in the Reserves through 1972. After the service, Jerome established the Hampton Clinic on Milwaukee’s northwest side, joined a few years later by his brother and best friend, Asher. After retiring from his medical practice, Jerome remained engaged in the world. He will be deeply and truly missed every day. Sheila N. Gelfars
Sheila N. Gelfars (Nee Gitelson) died July 20, 2021, at the age of 82.
Beloved wife of the late Morton Gelfars. Loving mother of Chana (Shmuel) Mandelbaum and Joel (Neda) Krauss. Proud grandmother of Chaya Mushka, Chava Shira, Shalom Dovber and Menachem Mendel Mandelbaum and Sam and Ethan Krauss. Dear sister of the late Bernie Gitelson. Further survived by childhood friends, Harriet Burbank, Florence Prentiss and Shirley Lief together with other dear relatives and friends. Bernice Gollup
Bernice Gollup, a lifelong resident of Milwaukee, has died at the age of 95. She was a devoted wife, mother, “bubbie”, and “great-bubbie”. As a young adult, she worked as a bookkeeper. As a young wife and mother, she traveled to Boston to undergo newly developed surgery to repair a congenital heart defect that would have otherwise shortened her life by decades. She took night classes for many years until returning as a full-time student at age 43, earning her degree in elementary education from Univeristy of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. After her retirement from Milwaukee Public Schools, she enjoyed reading, knitting, traveling, and playing Mah Jongg. She loved all things theatrical — plays, musicals, and symphony. She was a force to be reckoned with and proudly independent; her fierce dedication to her dear husband, Julius, during his prolonged chronic illness was inspirational. Mostly, she loved spending time with her family, and was especially generous with “ice cream money” for the children. Bernice was married for 53 years to Julius Gollup until his passing in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Hilda Tolmasky, sister Natalie Nye, brother-in-law Marvin Nye, and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her children Elaine (Jeffrey) Rest, Dr. Howard (Jill) Gollup, and Debra (Howard) Saltzman, eight adoring grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two special nephews and their families. Her family is a living legacy to Bernice and Julius. The family thanks the staff at Silverado North Shore for their compassionate care for Bernice the past several months, and the second floor Medical-Surgical staff at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, as well as everyone at Kathy Hospice. Charlene Diane Karlin (née Lipschultz), of River Hills, died on Aug 9, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Henry, adored mother of Tami (Raymond) Rokni, David Karlin, Jennifer Karlin, and Mara Karlin (Reuben Jacobson). She was an extraordinary Nonny Joon (Grandmother) to Arya and Alex Rokni, Sophie Beispiel, and Daniel and Emma Jacobson. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sara Lipschultz, her father, Harry Lipschultz, and her best friend, her brother Michael Lipschultz. Born in San Francisco, she lived most of her life in Milwaukee and was a proud graduate of Washington High School. She was a thoughtful, caring, and beautiful woman. Genya Kreymer passed away on Aug. 3, 2021, at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Grigoriy Kreymer. Loving mother of Ina (Grigoriy) Kaplan and Yan (Stella) Kreymer. Donald L. “Buddy” Reuben
Donald L. “Buddy” Reuben of Mequon died on July 17, 2021, at the age of 94. Buddy is survived by his beloved wife Susan Jane Reuben (nee Futowsky), sister Leatrice (Lewis) Marshak, and sisters-in-law Rosalyn Reuben and Ann (Ron) Zimmerman. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Buddy was preceded in death by his brother Morton Reuben, niece Suzanne Marshak and sister-in-law Marcia Futowsky. Buddy was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and then graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following that, he had a long career as a stock and commodities broker. When he wasn’t hard at work, he was an avid golfer. Private services were held with interment at Spring Hill Cemetery, memorials to Temple Menorah or the charity of your choice.
Helaine R. Shackman
Helaine R. Shackman was born on July 9, 1931, to Herbert Ribner and Betty Friedland. “Rusty,” as her friends and family knew her, enjoyed golf and the occasional scotch. She paired a lively sense of humor with an unwavering sense of propriety. Her honesty could both startle and endear; her grandchildren never had to wonder what Nana really thought. Rusty graduated from Milwaukee-Downer Seminary and attended Northwestern University. In 1973, she began a successful career in real estate that lasted more than 40 years, starting with Ogden & Company and ending at Shorewest. Her family, her career, and her circle of friends kept her rooted in the North Shore. You could hardly visit a golf club, supper club, or salon in Ozaukee County without running into someone she had represented or befriended. Rusty was a lifelong member of Congregation Emanu-El B’Ne Jeshurun in River Hills, where she served on the social impact committee. In her later years, she gave her time generously to Jewish Community Pantry. Wherever she went, she came ready with words of encouragement or a gentle reminder of what matters most. She is survived by her sister, Janet; her three beloved daughters, Carol, Nancy, and Judy; her grandchildren, Brad, Allison, Andy, Kyle, and Sam; and her great-grandchildren, Natalie and Hudson. Her love has always been the gravitational force at the center of our family. She will stay in our hearts forever. The funeral service was held on July 28 at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun with burial at Spring Hill Cemetery. Rabbi Marc Berkson officiated.
