The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, a program of Milwaukee Jewish Federation, held a weeklong workshop for Wisconsin educators from July 12-16.
“Navigating the Holocaust: Your Compass to Holocaust Education,” reached educators from nearly 40 Wisconsin school districts, said HERC Executive Director Samantha Abramson.
The week of virtual programming included experts and guest speakers, and participants were shown HERC’s Holocaust Education Map, a digital toolkit for educators with more than 100 lesson plans.
Speakers included fiction author and educator Dr. Danny M. Cohen, who discussed engaging students with Holocaust education. Historian, curator and archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Dr. Rebecca Erbelding led a talk showcasing the virtual exhibition, “Americans and the Holocaust,” which explored what Americans knew and how they responded to the Holocaust as it happened.
The workshop covered Wisconsin’s new Holocaust education mandate and the resources available to support educators; best practices for teaching about the Holocaust; specific content related to the Holocaust; and other topics.
