Jewish Social Services celebrates refugee day

Jewish Social Services of Madison, an agency that resettles refugees, recognized World Refugee Day with two events on June 20 and June 21. T

his year marked the 20th World Refugee Day since its inception in 2001 by the United Nations as a day to honor global refugees.

On June 20, World Refugee Day, JSS and a local volunteer group called Open Doors for Refugees hosted a private event for people and families in Madison who have come through the refugee resettlement process.

On June 21, JSS hosted a virtual panel with the theme “Coming from Across the Globe to Make Madison Home, Refugee Resettlement in Dane County.” The event featured individuals resettled by JSS and JSS’s Resettlement Director, Becca Schwartz.

The events were intended to raise awareness of the plight of refugees around the world and celebrate the refugees communities in Madison, according to a JSS press release.
