Song and spirit

Broadway, Talmud  

“If not now, when?” Join Tapestry: Arts & Ideas from the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, with support from the Milwaukee Rep, for a concert experience on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will envision justice through the prism of Pirkei Avot (the Talmudic “Ethics of the Fathers”) and the beauty of Broadway songs. Sponsored by the Libby Temkin Endowment for the Arts with additional funding provided by the Daniel M. Soref Charitable Trust and the Suzy B. Ettinger Foundation. Transgender journey 

“Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey.” Join as a family shares their memoir of Jeremy Ivester’s journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community during an event on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. This is not only Jeremy’s story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives — those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. Adam and Eve 

Bring your lunch and join a conversation about key people from the Torah: Adam and Eve, with the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Coalition for Jewish Learning’s Tziporah Altman-Shafer on Wednesday, June 9, at noon. South African museum  

The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is partnering with the South African Jewish Museum to explore the Jewish communal evolution in South Africa, with a particular focus on the interaction between Jewish and Black interests in the country, on June 10 at noon. The South African Jewish Museum encompasses the full gamut of the history of Jews in South Africa – including the community’s historical roots in Lithuania and elsewhere, its instrumental role in the building of South Africa as we know it, as well as its noteworthy contributions to contemporary society. Arts and Ideas  

Join the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center’s Tapestry for Art and Ideas with Artistic Director of Skylight Music Theater Michael Unger on June 14, at 7 pm.  Artists are the prophets of our times, so often speaking out against injustice in our pandemic ridden times. How, in fact, can the arts contribute to tikkun olam, repairing the world? How, in particular, has the Milwaukee arts scene, now starved because of the pandemic, struggled with its vitality and relevance in these troubled times? This discussion will include viewing the documentary “Midsummer in Newtown,” the uplifting story of Michael Unger’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with children scarred by the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Tuesday, June 15  

Economic Forum  

The Milwaukee Jewish Federation will be hosting its Economic Forum on June 15 at noon. The keynote speaker will be Chef Jose Andres, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and founder of World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that sees food as a vehicle for empowering communities and strengthening economies. He is a multiple James Beard Award-winning chef and recipient of the 2018 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year award. A local panel of experts will include Caitlin Cullen, chef and owner of Tandem restaurant; JoAnne Sabir, co-developer of Sherman Phoenix; and Omar Shaikh, developer of The Avenue’s 3rd Street Market Hall. The Milwaukee Jewish Federation’ s Economic Forum will focus on food as an example of Milwaukee’s resilience and as a mechanism for revitalizing our local economy. 

Judaic Art  

Join the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center Art Specialist, Andres Hernandez, in creating unique and beautifully handmade Judaic Art starting on Tuesday, June 15. The JCC will be bringing back clay for this our first in-person, safe and socially distanced class. This is a two-session class; June 15 from 4-5 p.m. you will be handcrafting the clay pieces and in the second session, June 29 from 4-4:30 p.m. you will be glazing the pieces for firing. This is an in-person event.

Jewish art of WPA 

Virtual opening preview of museum exhibit, “Brother, Can You Spare A Dime: Jewish Artist of the WPA.” Join the Jewish Museum Milwaukee on June 16 at 7 p.m. for an evening of music and art that was funded through the Works Project Administration.  Learn about the ethnomusicologists who captured distinctly American music for posterity including legendary blues/folk musician Lead Belly and explore Library of Congress holdings with Dr. Todd Harvey, Curator of the Alan Lomax Collection at LOC’s American Folklife Center. Groove to Lead Belly’s blues music performed by Fruteland Jackson, including “Goodnight Irene”, and tour the exhibit that explores the working men and women and their environments as they navigated the Great Depression. LOMED Lunch and Learn: All About Cain and Abel.
