A monthly recommendation from local Jewish educator Liza Wiemer …

Picture book: “The Polio Pioneer: Dr. Jonas Salk and the Polio Vaccine.” Writing by Linda Elovitz Marshall, illustrated by Lisa Anchin, published by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers.

This is a great introduction to viruses and vaccinations and the impact Dr. Jonas Salk had on putting an end to polio. With the pandemic, this is an excellent way to explain the necessity for vaccinations and how they impact society. The author did an excellent job of sharing Dr. Salk’s Jewish family history and his passion to help others in this world.

Educator and author Liza Wiemer, of Fox Point, has taught in nine of our Milwaukee Jewish religious schools and day schools. Her latest novel, “The Assignment,” is appropriate for ages 12 and up.
