Saturday, May 1 

Sinai anniversaries 

Join Congregation Sinai in celebrating Sinai’s 65th and Rabbi David Cohen’s 25th anniversaries on Saturday, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. The Fox Point congregation will also be honoring the Lubar family for their contributions to the Campaign for Tomorrow.

Blood drive 

The Peltz Center for Jewish Life is honoring Zevi Silvers memory with a blood drive to help save (and extend) other peoples lives on May 2 at 10 a.m. at the Peltz Center for Jewish Life. This was started by Zevi in appreciation of the blood that he received so many times. For more information, go to ChabadMequon.org 

Taste of Memories  

Parternship2Gether Sovev Kinneret, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and St. Paul Jewish Federation present a cooking and commemoration series called Taste of Memories. In this installation, on Sunday, May 2, at noon, you will join the Ashkenazi Levy family as they bake the Chocolate Pound Cake that Erez always had for his birthday. Taste and smell have a strong bond with our memories. And for most of us, food means love. Each of the bereaved families from Sovev Kinneret will share their loved ones favorite foods as well as stories to commemorate them in the Taste of Memories cooking and baking sessions. Flights in Memory 

Flights in Memory of the Souls of Auschwitz will be held on May 2 at noon and feature will Major Gen. Elyezer Shkedy. Elyezer will share the story of his father’s survival of the Holocaust in Hungary and his instrumental role in a special IAF memorial fly-over Auschwitz in September 2003 in memory of those murdered at Auschwitz. This is a program put on by Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center. To register, visit Ovation.org/Foundation/FlightInMemory. 

Monday, May 3 

Professor Gillian Roger 

A Tapestry initiative by the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center features local university and arts professionals in a series of classes about the diversity of Jewish engagement in the arts. The session on Monday, May 3, at 7 p.m. will feature Prof. Gillian Roger of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School for the Arts. Tuesday, May 4 

Buenos Aires 

The hub of Jewish life in Argentina is the AMIA – Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina in Buenos Aires. Join the Jewish Museum Milwaukee on May 4 at noon for a virtual tour highlighting the physical and historical significance of this Jewish Community Center and content from the exhibit, Sites to Remember and Honor, exploring the monuments and works of art dedicated to victims of the Holocaust, the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, and the 1994 bombing of the AMIA. Letters in the Scroll 

The Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Coalition for Jewish Learning will be hosting a virtual LOMED Book Club on Tuesday, May 4, at 7 pm. Join Tziporah Altman Shafer in a discussion of “Letters in the Scroll” by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you have read the book. Antisemitism: How to respond 

The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation invites 10th-12th graders and parents with children of all ages to participate in two virtual seminars that will empower participants to recognize and respond to antisemitism in productive ways. This free online training, developed by the Anti-Defamation League, will educate about antisemitism and bias, foster critical thinking about online activity, equip students to effectively respond to antisemitism. The parent session will be held on Wednesday, May 5, at 7 p.m. and the teen session will be held on Tuesday, May 18, at 7 p.m. Email Allison Hayden at AllisonH@MilwaukeeJewish.org to register for either or both.

Kidshare 

The Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center brings you another year of fundraising at Kidshare on May 6 at 7 p.m. KidShare 2021 will support – and celebrate the success of – the Campaign for a Strong JCC, which supports JCC programs like camping, early childhood education, programs for individuals with special needs, and scholarship support for those who need it. Hollywood Hates Hitler! 

The Jewish Museum Milwaukee welcomes Chris Yogerst for a virtual book talk about Hollywood Hates Hitler! on May 13 at noon. In September 1941, a handful of isolationist senators set out to tarnish Hollywood for warmongering, introducing a resolution aimed to limit both radio and film that “extensively used for propaganda purposes designed to influence the public mind in the direction of participation in the European War.” The immigrant moguls in Hollywood were acutely aware of the conditions in Europe. After Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass), the gloves came off and a number of studios released films later targeted by the Senate. Join author of Hollywood Hates Hitler! Jew-Baiting, Anti-Nazism, and the Senate Investigation into Warmongering in Motion Pictures,Chris Yogerst, as he examines the years leading up to and through the Senate Investigation into Motion Picture War Propaganda, detailing the isolationist senators’ relationship with the America First movement. Social Justice Shabbat  

Join Congregation Sinai for Social Justice Shabbat with State Rep. Evan Goyke, who will be speaking on criminal justice reform in the Wisconsin legislature, on May 14 at 6 p.m. Evan Goyke is a state representative and attorney who represents a district on Milwaukee’s north side.
