Local Jewish educator Liza Wiemer has this book on her mind …
“Let Liberty Rise!: How America’s Schoolchildren Helped Save the Statue of Liberty” by Chana Stiefel, illustrated by Chuck Groenink, March 2, 2021, Scholastic.
There are many connections to Lady Liberty and the Jewish people, and Chana Stiefel shares an important link in this beautifully written and illustrated picture book. Children will learn about the impact of Jewish Hungarian immigrant, newspaper publisher and writer, Joseph Pulitzer, who sent out a plea to raise funds to erect Lady Liberty. His words inspired children to make a difference. This book shows how our youths’ contributions matter and can have a lasting impact on this world. Many themes can be discussed with this book: liberty, freedom, immigration, empowerment, and the impact of tzedakah. Highly recommend for kindergarten and up.
Educator and author Liza Wiemer, of Fox Point, has taught in nine of our Milwaukee Jewish religious schools and day schools. Her latest novel, “The Assignment,” was published Aug. 25 and is appropriate for ages 12 and up.
