Message from Emma Jacobson, age 10: If we wear masks, we can stop the virus

Do you like COVID-19? Because I know I don’t. Do you like not being able to go to school and see your friends or talking to them from social distance? Because I don’t. Do you like having your camps or play dates canceled? Because I don’t.

But if we wear masks every time we go outside and don’t go to restaurants, we could stop this virus. It’s like a fire. We have to contain it in order to stop it from spreading.

I went to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website and learned that more than 150,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. That makes me feel nervous. It also makes me feel sort of annoyed because we haven’t all been doing what we could have done.

Some things we can do are social distancing, washing our hands really, really well, and not going out. Wearing a cloth face mask is sometimes better than a normal one because we need the normal ones for our hospital workers. And remember, we have to contain the virus in order to stop it.

Emma Jacobson is entering fifth grade in the Washington, D.C., area. Milwaukee is her second home, and she has many friends and family here.
