Hillel Milwaukee is open, offering student support

MILWAUKEE – With some local college classes canceled and spring breaks extended, Hillel Milwaukee is open and ready to serve students as needed, said Executive Director Julie Schack.

Hillel Milwaukee serves 12 different schools, including Marquette University and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Hillel Milwaukee, at 3053 N. Stowell Ave., stands beside the UWM campus, but it is not a program of UWM. The university has extended spring breakwhich starts March 16. It will now end a week later, on March 29. Classes will then take place remotely at least through April 10.

Schack said some students are distressed, with a variety of concerns, including the notion that their campus jobs could be suspended, along with the income from them.

“It’s all very fluid,” Schack said. “We are monitoring the situation in real time as we are continuing to stay open and serve our students. We’re figuring out what that means.”

Schack is in contact with other Hillels around the country as the network trades best practices for the coronavirus and the complexity of the human response to it.

She wants students to “just know that we’re a resource for them for them to come and talk.”

Hillel Milwaukee stands ready to “help them connect Jewishly if that feels right and how to find the resources they need to help them feel safe and secure.”
