Life and Death in Łódź

“Ghetto Chronicles Part II- Life and Death in the Łódź Ghetto with author and historian Sam Kassow.” The Łódź Ghetto was the second-largest ghetto in Europe, and it survived until August 1944. The saga of the Łódź Ghetto is inseparable from the story of Chaim Rumkowski, whom the Nazis appointed as “The Elder of the Jews” in 1944 and who ruled the Ghetto with an iron hand until he perished in Auschwitz at the end of August 1944. Many Jews saw him as a vile and corrupt dictator while others grudgingly admired him for his determination to do whatever it took to gain time and save as many Jewish lives as possible. Join Sam Kassow, historian and author of “Who Will Write Our History? Rediscovering a Hidden Archive From the Warsaw Ghetto,” for discussion. March 26, 7-8:30 p.m. Jewish Museum Milwaukee, 1360 N. Prospect Ave. Museum members $6. Non-members $8. Book sale and signing will immediately follow the lecture. Co-sponsored by Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, a program of Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and The Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies. Offered in connection with The Girl in the Diary: Searching for Rywka from the Łódź Ghetto, an exhibit on display at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, through May 17, 2020.
