Jewish-Catholic book dialogue

Book Dialogue: “On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family and the Church in the 21st Century” by Pope Francis and Rabbi Abraham Skorka. Meaningful dialogue among members of different faith communities is an antidote to baseless misunderstanding and hatred. That is why the Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies offers Book Dialogue Programs to not only educate the participants, but to also offer opportunities for Catholics and Jews to dialogue with a focus on books of interest to both faith communities. Film: ‘Why the Jews?’

“Why the Jews?” (Canada)  (2018) Nov. 3, 1 p.m. Why have Jews accomplished so much – in the sciences, the arts, as doctors, lawyers, comedians, filmmakers, inventors, professors, journalists – in undo proportions to their numbers? Documentary looks at extraordinary contributions Jews have made to the world – and using some of the world’s most prominent thinkers, looks for answers. 52 minutes. Ages 12 to adult. Israeli Falafel Night

Peltz Center for Jewish Life, 2233 W. Mequon Road, Mequon, is once again having Israeli Falafel Night with Israeli chef Yaniv Swissa. Music for KOACH seniors

KOACH, a program for adults 65 and older, will be held on Nov. 7 at Temple Menorah, 9363 N. 76th Street, Milwaukee.  Entertainment by Frogwater, the acoustic musical pairing of John and Susan Nicholson, musical ambassadors of “eclectic acoustic peoples’ music” spanning from Celtic to Delta blues, classical to pop with a healthy dose of unique original material in the mix. Film: ‘My Dear Children’

“My Dear Children” (United States) (2017) Free film class Nov. 7, 7 p.m. How does a mother find the courage to send away her own children from danger? This documentary examines pogroms following the Russian Revolution of 1917, highlighting the story of a Jewish mother of 12 who wrote a first-hand account of why she sent some of her children away. Note: Includes graphic violent images. 1 hr. 10 min. Suitable for ages 16 to adult. La Crosse Choral Concert

Milwaukee Jewish Community Chorale to hold “Outreach Interfaith Choral Concert” in La Crosse. Cantor Brian Serle, spiritual leader at Sons Of Abraham Congregation in La Crosse is organizing this event. He will be singing and soloing with the Chorale. Other La Crosse faith communities will participate. This concert is made possible by a grant from a generous donor. Nov. 10, 5 p.m., reception follows. Film: ‘Korczak’

“Korczak” (Poland/Germany)  (1990)  Free film class. Nov. 12, 7 p.m. Drama brings to life the story of Jewish Holocaust hero Janusz Korczak – a famous Polish children’s author, physician and an innovator in the field of educational psychology. He is best known for the orphanage he ran for homeless children in the Warsaw Ghetto – and how he refused to desert the orphans when offered safe passage out of Poland during the Holocaust, perishing with them in Treblinka. In Polish and German with subtitles. 1 hour, 58 minutes. Ages 13 to adult. ‘Regina’ (Hungary) (2013) Discover the story of Regina Jonas – the first woman ever to be ordained as a rabbi – in 1930s Berlin. Jonas grew up in a traditional household and she led and counseled Jews in Theresienstadt before being killed in Auschwitz. Rachel Weisz narrates this documentary. Comedian Ashley Blaker

Ashley Blaker, an internationally acclaimed Jewish comedian who performs stand-up worldwide and can be seen and heard on the BBC and on TV and radio across the world, will perform in the Milwaukee area on Nov. 16. According to The New York Times: “A slickly funny stand-up show. He is proof that even the most reverent enjoy a little irreverence.” Organized by Milwaukee Jewish Federation, the show will be held at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in the Daniel M. Grandchildren and Jewish identity

Want to spend time telling your Jewish family story to your grandchildren with other grandparents and grandchildren? This is a year-long experience for grandparents and their 5-6th grade grandchildren to explore meaningful connections, family narratives and legacies around Jewish experiences. Free film class: “Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz” (Canada) (2018). Nov. 25, 7 p.m. At 98-years-old, feisty and articulate Ben Ferencz is the last surviving Nuremberg trial prosecutor. After the war, Ferencz dedicated his efforts to establish an International Criminal Court that would try “crimes against humanity”– which was revolutionary for its time. 1 hour, 22 min.  Suitable for ages: 12 to adult. Alcoholics Anonymous

An international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. Breast cancer support

Breast cancer patients, their families and friends are matched with professionally trained breast cancer survivors and co-survivors. All connections are personalized and based on similar diagnoses, treatment plans and circumstances. Services are free and begin with a phone conversation. ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis supports both patients and survivors. Friendship House Fellowship

A support group for Jewish men and women in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other substances. Requirements for membership are participation in a 12-step program (such as AA or Narcotics Anonymous) and a desire to recover. Meetings are Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at The Shul, 3109 N. Lake Drive in Milwaukee.

Jewish Grief Group
