Saundra Baron
Saundra Baron of Glendale died Aug. 2, 2019. She was 83.
She was preceded in death by Jacobo Baron in 1989. Also preceded in death by brothers Jeffrey and Irving (Barbara) Kreindler. Mother of David (Deborah) Baron, Rick (Lisa) Baron, and the late Mark (Evelyn) Baron. Sister of Alfie (Sharon) Kreindler and sister-in-law Patricia Wise. Grandmother of Hope; Jonah and Marissa; Jaclyn, Jonathan and Eliza Baron. Further survived by other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Aug. 4 at The Chapel, 3601 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood. Interment at Second Home Cemetery, 3705 S. 43rd St., Milwaukee. Rabbi Joel Alter and Blane Goodman Funeral Service assisted the family. Memorial contributions are welcome to Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid.
Rose Daitsman
Rose Daitsman died July 26, 2019 in Milwaukee. She was 93.
She was born on Oct. 27, 1925. Rose was a pioneering educator and human rights activist. Her energy and strong sense of justice and equity led her to advocate for, and create, social change in an array of fields.
Arriving in Milwaukee in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering (Cooper Union, 1949) and a master of arts in education (Xavier University, 1966), Rose earned a position at the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She quickly realized the dearth of minority students in the school and set out to change it. University administrators soon approved a pre-college program, the Gateway to Engineering, Science, and Technology, which recruited minority students from high schools in Milwaukee to learn about the field in weekend and summer programs. As a result of the program, the college experienced a 20 percent increase in minority admissions. She led the program until her retirement from the university in the 1990s.
A committed anti-war activist, during the Vietnam War she was selected to serve on a citizens’ delegation to the Paris Peace Talks. Throughout her life, she continued to work with the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
Rose was a founding member of the Society of Women Engineers, an international organization that today celebrates its seventieth year and has over 40,000 members, and she worked through the 1950s in private industry. She took an early interest in pollution control and proposed air quality regulations as early as 1960.
In 2006, Rose founded the Greater Milwaukee Human Rights Campaign. This work contributed to the resurrection of Milwaukee’s Equal Rights Commission in 2009.
She was granted the Frank P. Zeidler Public Service Award from the City of Milwaukee in 2016.
She is survived by her daughter Judith, sons William and Andrew, and grandchildren Linda, Jeffrey and Samuel. A memorial service will be held in Milwaukee in October. Donations in her memory can be addressed to Doctors Without Borders, the Daitsman Scholarship Fund of the Wisconsin Labor History Society, or Circle Pines Center in Delton, Michigan.
Nancy Taxman Friedlander
Nancy Taxman Friedlander of Boynton Beach, Florida died July 29, 2019. She was 71.
Born in Milwaukee Aug. 14, 1947, she is a graduate of Whitefish Bay High School, plus University of Wisconsin and Washington University in 1965 and 1969, respectively. She earned a bachelor’s of arts degree. She was an elementary school teacher at Solomon Schechter Academy in Dallas from 1990-2003 and at Kol Ami Emanu-El Day School in Plantation, Florida from 2003 to 2012.
She was also a member at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El.
Survivors include husband Alan Friedlander of Boyton Beach and children Andy Friedlander of Delray Beach, Florida and Dana Friedlander Katz of Woodland Hills, California. Other survivors include granddaughter Jordanna Katz; sisters Julie Taxman Stracks (Robert) and Margo Taxman Crafton (Arthur); and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and great aunt, and also a 25-year breast cancer survivor. Burial was at Menorah Gardens in Southwest Ranches, Florida on July 31 with Rabbi Howard Needleman at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions welcome to the Michael J. Ann C. Garber
Ann C. Garber of Milwaukee died July 1, 2019. She was 93.
She was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Milwaukee. Ann graduated from Washington High School in 1943 and then from University of Wisconsin – Madison. There, she earned a master’s degree in social work. She became a member of Congregation Shalom. She was active in numerous Jewish women’s organizations and worked as a social worker resettling Jews from the former Soviet Union. She was with Jewish Family and Children’s Services from 1969-1984.
She is survived by spouse Julius Garber, son, Mark (Judy) Garber, and grandsons Joel and Daniel (Dana) Garber, among others. Special thanks to caregivers Fatima and Gemma.
Place of burial was Spring Hill cemetery on July 3, 2019. Rabbi Ron Shapiro and Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home assisted the family. Memorial contributions are welcome to the Mayo Clinic, Ovation Jewish Home and Congregation Shalom.
Sylvia Kaufman
Sylvia Kaufman of Milwaukee died July 18, 2019. She was 92.
Sylvia was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, 1929.
She is survived by Bernard Kaufman, her husband. A member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, she worked with him at East Side Foods Grocery Store.
Sylvia played mahjong and canasta and she golfed. She was a skilled knitter, too.
Other survivors include daughter Ellen (Ben) Mandelman, the late Gary (Jan) Kaufman, Laurie (the late Gary) Schmidt, plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her greatest joy was her family.
The place of burial was Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel Cemetery on Aug. 18. Rabbi Marc Berkson and Blane Goodman Funeral Service assisted the family.

Harold Lerner
Harold Lerner of Milwaukee died July 24, 2019. He was 68.
Preceded in death by parents Charlotte and Ben Lerner. Father of Sara Lerner and Mark Lerner. Brother of Marlene Lerner and Michael (Wendy) Lerner. Further survived by close friends Marty Thau, Rich and Sandy Washer, other relatives, and friends.

Joanne Oxman
Joanne (nee Stein) Oxman of Bayside died July 16, 2019. She was 73.
Joanne was born Sept. 25, 1945 in Milwaukee.
She passed away peacefully with her family by her side. She leaves behind her loving family: Howard (husband), Jennifer Walker (daughter), Marty (son), and Lauren (daughter-in-law), along with her three beautiful grandchildren (Marli, Max, and Breeanna), her sister Sherry Miller, and many nieces and nephews.
Joni spent most of her professional career as the general manager at the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle along with her other full-time job as a devoted spouse and mother. Spending time with family and friends was her ultimate passion. Joni’s love for all was unconditional and her grandchildren brought her so much joy.
Funeral services were July 19 at Mound Zion Cemetery, with a celebration of her life held at the Four Points Sheridan. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Lung Association.

Sylvia L. Pasch
Sylvia L. (nee Herzoff) Pasch of Glendale died July 23, 2019. She was 100.
She came to Wisconsin from Sioux City, Iowa.
Sylvia was predeceased by spouse James M. Pasch in 1983. She was valedictorian at Central High School and though she attended the University of Iowa, she couldn’t finish her degree because her father died and she returned home to help support her mother.
She was a member of Congregation Shalom, serving as an early member in the 1950s. She was sisterhood president. She was part of Hadassah and worked as a bookkeeper at Bullock Co. in Glendale.
She loved reading, tennis, bridge and all types of exercise.
Survivors include children Carol (James) Ross; Steven (the late Joan) Pasch; Dr. Allan (Sandy) Pasch. Grandchildren: Michael (Kirsten Fruit) Ross, David (Jessica) Ross, Dr. Lauren (Fred Cannon) Pasch, Whitney Pasch and Jimmy Pasch.
Everyone who knew her loved her, and she loved them right back.

Dorothy E. Sattler
Dorothy E. Sattler of Mequon died July 12, 2019. She was 89.
She was born March 4, 1930 in Chicago. She was preceded in death in 2017 by her husband of 66 years, Theodore Sattler. She was mother to Tyler (Sharon) Sattler, Sheila (Emil) Orcholski, Barry (Deborah) Sattler. Grandmother to Nathaniel Sattler (Rachel Butler), Gabrielle (James) Wagor, Jay (Laura) Orcholski, Marcia (Brett) Nicholson, Jonah and Kyler Sattler. Great-grandmother to Rebecca, Eva and Miriam Sattler, Benjamin Wagor, Susannah and Palmer Orcholski, and Hailey Nicholson. Further survived by nieces, nephews and other loving family members.

Milton Shinken
Milton Shinken of Milwaukee died July 24, 2019. He was 91.
He was born in Wisconsin Feb. 16, 1928 and attended Washington High School. A 1959 graduate of Marquette Law School, he was an attorney. He loved sports.
He was predeceased by brothers Leo and Gerald. Buried at Beth Hamedrosh Hagadol on July 25. Rabbi Levi Emmer and Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home provided assistance.

Harvey M. Wichman
Harvey M. Wichman, M.D., of Bayside, died Aug. 1, 2019. He was 80.
Born May 10, 1939 in Milwaukee, he was a loving, compassionate and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle, physician, colleague and friend. He was beloved by his patients and coworkers. His passion for orthopedic surgery was passed on to his two sons who continue to share the same grace and compassion with their patients. He was a terrific leader, serving as Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association president from 2000-2002 and also as his class representative for the M.D. class of 1965 for many years. He had a love for travel, music, food and adventure.
Husband of Donna (nee Horwitz) Wichman. Father of Marla (Bruce) Doffek, Mark (Susan) Wichman, Monette (Craig) Leva, Marni (Craig) Raben, and Matthew (Aree) Wichman. Grandfather of Josh (McKenzie), Benji and Daniel Wichman; Ellee, Alex, Rachel and Elihu Leva; Asher and Levi Raben; Blake, Charlie, Reid and Emery Wichman.
