Art, writing contest on Holocaust for youth

Students in grades 6-12 can spend time with a Holocaust survivor and listen to his or her story, then enter a contest with an original written piece or artwork that reflects the survivor’s testimony.

Winners will visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum at the nation’s capital. Teachers of the winners will receive a $100 gift.

Students can use one of these three questions to frame their work: What did you learn from your experience of the testimony?  How would you recreate the testimony in a creative art form?  What is the importance of this testimony for our world?

They can either interview a survivor in person or rely on the video testimonies from the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center’s video archive of Wisconsin survivors.

Students are to choose one of these mediums: essay, short story, poetry, film or video, or sculpture and visual art.

Two prizes will be allotted to middle school students and two will be allotted to high school students.

All winners will be listed on the HERC website and their pieces featured in an exhibit at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in spring 2019.

The submission deadline is Monday, April 1. For more information visit HolocaustCenterMilwaukee.org/Education/Contest.

For questions contact Brittany Hager McNeely, director of education at the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, at 414-963-2714 or BrittanyH@MilwaukeeJewish.org.
