Oct. 5 was Raoul Wallenberg Day

MADISON – Gov. Walker proclaimed Oct. 5, 2018 to be Raoul Wallenberg Day in Wisconsin.

Raoul Wallenberg

While serving as Sweden’s special envoy in Hungary during World War II, Wallenberg issued passports to protect Jews and sheltered them in housing designated as Swedish territory. He is generally believed to have died in a Soviet prison and is now considered one of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. He is credited with saving thousands of people.

After a request – made by a representative of the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center and the Jewish Community Relations Council, both of Milwaukee Jewish Federation – the governor signed the proclamation.
