Gathering tonight to include teens, clergy

A community-wide gathering set for tonight, Oct. 29, is to include teens reading the names of those killed and representatives from all major Jewish denominations.

The community gathering is slated for 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, 6880 N. Green Bay Road, Glendale, to mourn after the murder spree in Pittsburgh this past Shabbat morning. The shooting in the Tree of Life synagogue left 11 people dead, shocking the American Jewish community and prompting similar memorial gatherings around the nation.

The event is to include the presence of representatives from local Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Reconstructionist synagogues. Representatives of all Milwaukee-area synagogues are expected.

Psalm readings are slated from clergy representing Congregation Emanuel B’ne Jeshurun, Congregation Shalom, Congregation Sinai and CBINT.

The Rev. David Simmons of St. Matthias Episcopal Church is expected to speak, representing the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee.

Students from BBYO Wisconsin Region, the Jewish youth group, are to read the names of those killed in the attack.

Local synagogue cantors David Barash, Karen Berman, Richard Newman and Jeremy Stein are to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

Milwaukee Jewish Federation Board Chair Moshe Katz and President and CEO Hannah Rosenthal are to deliver remarks.
