Milwaukee Film Festival showing two Jewish interest films in coming weeks

MILWAUKEE – At least two films with themes of interest to Jewish moviegoers are to be shown by the Milwaukee Film Festival this year – “Bye Bye Germany” and “The Cakemaker.”

The Milwaukee Film Festival is Oct. 18-Nov. 1. Here are the film descriptions and show times.

Bye Bye Germany. “A post-war comedy with chutzpah.” Frankfurt, 1946. Having successfully survived the Holocaust and Nazi regime, David Bermann and his Jewish friends now have their sights set on immigrating to America. Sensing an opportunity in their war-torn locale, the men become “luxury” linen salesman, going door-to-door and selling their wares to guilt-ridden Germans through sheer chutzpah. But as their business booms, questions linger about David’s wartime activities. Such as: Why does he have two passports? And why did he visit Hitler at Obersalzberg? “Bye Bye Germany” is a high-wire balance of intrigue, drama and comedy. Friday, Oct. 19, 4 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 30, noon; Thursday Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m.

The Cakemaker. Young German baker Thomas engages in a closeted love affair with Oren, a married Israeli man. These tender bursts of passion (ignited during sporadic business trips) are cut short when Oren tragically dies back home in a car accident. Traveling to Jerusalem in search of answers, Thomas ingratiates himself to Oren’s newly widowed wife, taking up work at her café making cakes and cookies under a fake identity, becoming involved in her life beyond his expectations in this enthralling romantic drama. Sunday, Oct. 21, 1:15 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 23, noon; Wednesday, Oct. 31, 3:15 p.m.
