Sunday, Oct. 7: ‘The Samuel Project’

Grandfather Samuel (Hal Linden) shares his life story with his teenage grandson Eli, a story that he hasn’t told in 75 years. When Samuel was a boy, a young woman saved him from being captured by the Nazis in Germany. Eli makes his grandfather the subject of his senior year animated art project called “Samuel Project.”  He enters it into an art showcase.

“Shalom Bollywood” is a documentary film with flair. It explores the lives of five Indian Jewish women who were leading actresses on the big screen for decades.

Monday, Oct. 8: ‘The Testament’

7:30 p.m.

2018, Austria, Israel. Hebrew, German, English, Yiddish, with English subtitles, 88 minutes. Director: Amichai Greenberg.

When a high-society family in Austria sets out to build real estate over grounds where a massacre of Jews in World War II took place, Yoel, a senior Holocaust researcher, suspects the family of having an ulterior motive: to erase history. Yoel throws himself into a heated lawsuit with the family, in which the stability of his personal life is threatened.

Tuesday, Oct. 9: ‘An Act of Defiance’

2017, South Africa, Netherlands. English, Afrikaan, 124 minutes.  Director: Jean van de Velde.

A historical drama set in South Africa Apartheid times. When Nelson Mandela and nine others, including Jewish anti-Apartheid fighters, were arrested in the summer 1963 raid, they were confronted with the risk of capital punishment. White Afrikaner lawyer Bram Fischer (Peter Paul Muller) takes up their case to defend their liberty, bargaining with his career and risking the safety of his family.

Wednesday, Oct. 10: ‘ITZHAK

Renowned Jewish violinist Itzhak Perlman’s life is told in a documentary that resonates. Hear the story behind the music, of his parent’s emigration from Poland to Israel, his struggle with polio and his earliest musical training.

Wednesday, Oct. 10: ‘Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel’

7:45 p.m.

2018, United States, Israel, Japan, South Korea. English, 87 minutes. Directors: Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, Jeremy Newberger.

After a long road of defeat, Israel’s national baseball team, Team Israel, places in the 2017 international tournament. The team—including several Jewish American Major League players like Ike Davis, Josh Zeid and Ryan Lavarnway, who have never been to Israel, travel to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Seoul, where they strengthen their Jewish identity. Along for the journey is their team mascot “Mensch on a Bench.”

Thursday, Oct. 11: Shelter

Mossad agent Naomi takes on a new identity for her mission in Germany to protect Mona, a Lebanese informant. Naomi realizes that a Hezbollah leader is seeking revenge. The two women form an unexpected friendship.
