Melvin H. Altman

Melvin H. Altman of Fox Point died Aug. 2, 2018. He was 89.

He was born Dec. 26, 1928 in Milwaukee.

He is survived by spouse Barbara Altman. He graduated from Washington High School during the snowstorm of January 1947. Melvin graduated from University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1951.

A member of Congregation Shalom, he was involved with Alpha Epsilon Pi, the Kiwanis, the Alpha Zeta Omega National Pharmaceutical Fraternity and other service activities.

Melvin was a pharmacist and store owner, in business with his brother Al Altman. Melvin truly loved his lifetime profession as a pharmacist. Business locations included Altman Bradley Village Pharmacy and the University Store on the Marquette University Campus.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by wife Barbara Altman; children David and Beth Altman, Dr. Adrianne Altman and Andrew Saletra; and grandchildren Jake Altman, Brody and Allie Saletra.

Burial was at Spring Hill Cemetery Aug. 7, with rabbis Noah Chertkoff and Ronald Shapiro at Blane Goodman Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are welcome to Congregation Shalom or a charity of your choice.

Donald Grande

Donald Grande died Aug. 11, 2018 at the age of 82.

Beloved husband of Barbara Grande (nee Gordon). Cherished father of Jill (Jay) Plavnick, Roger (Deborah Kacanek) Grande and Steven (Renee Staton) Grande. Loving grandfather of David Plavnick, Lauren Plavnick, Sasha Grande-Kacanek, Genevieve Grande Staton and Georgia Grande Staton. Dear brother of Richard (the late Marcia) Grande. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 12 at the Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home with burial at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel Cemetery, 134 S. Dana Court, Milwaukee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Jehudah, 3100 N. 52nd St., Milwaukee, WI 53216; Yeshiva Elementary School, 5115 W. Keefe Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53216; or Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study, 3288 N. Lake Dr., Milwaukee, WI 53211. Rabbi Michel Twerski officiated.

Thelma Hurwitz

Thelma Hurwitz (Nee Wein) died on Aug. 2, 2018 at the age of 101. Beloved wife of the late Herman Hurwitz. Loving mother of Ken Hurwitz, Francie Shagin and the late Larry Hurwitz. Proud grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral service Sunday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. at Second Home Cemetery, 3705 S. 43rd St., Milwaukee.  Memorial contributions to the Milwaukee Jewish Day School or charity of your choice appreciated. Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home assisted the family.

Morris Katz

Morris (Morry) Katz of Shorewood died May 9, 2017. He was 85.

Morry was born in Milwaukee Jan. 20, 1933 and graduated from North Division High School in 1951. He opened and operated Morry’s on Prospect and bought and sold many residential and commercial properties. Special interests included playing tennis, racquetball and gin rummy. He loved watching Wisconsin Badger football, basketball and his Green Bay Packers.

Morry held fundraising events for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at Morry’s and worked the Labor Day telethon on the phones. He encouraged his fellow tavern owners to donate. He served his country in the Korean War.

Survivors include wife Debbie Katz; children David (Jaclyn) Katz, Sarah Katz, Michael (Marilyn) Katz, Mynette (Jeff) Deskin, Maureen (Randy) Kilmer and Wendy Katz.

The place of burial was Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel with Rabbi Ron Shapiro and Blane Goodman Funeral Service. Memorial contributions are welcome to Congregation Shalom Social Action Fund or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Barbara Lieberman

Barbara Lieberman (Nee Altfeld) Passed away in Skokie, Illinois on Aug. 1, 2018 at the age of 92.

Barbara was a Milwaukee native and long-time resident of Shorewood. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Leonard Lieberman for 60 years. Loving mother of Marsha (Dermid) Eagen of Winnetka and Deborah Mislove of Scottsdale. Proud grandmother of Sarah and David Eagen and Lauren (Jenelle Birchmeier) and Leah Mislove. Preceded in death by her sister, the late Shirley (Sonny) Marcus. A graveside funeral service was held on Sun., Aug. 5 at Anshai Lebowitz Cemetery, 326 S. Hawley Rd., Milwaukee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Madd.org, appreciated. Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home assisted the family.

Ruth Roffa

Ruth Roffa (Nee Schwartz) died July 29, 2018 at the age of 96.

Beloved wife of the late Norman Roffa. Cherished mother of Lynda (Allan) Baron and Richard Roffa. Proud grandmother of Blake (Beth) Baron and Jodi (David) Finn as well as four great-grandchildren. Further survived by other dear relatives and friends.

A graveside funeral service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel Cemetery, 134 S. Dana Court, Milwaukee.  Rabbi Levi Emmer of the Jewish Home and Care Center officiated.  Memorial contributions made to Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation will be appreciated.  Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home assisted the family.

Donald M. Wiesner

Donald M. Wiesner, 86, died on July 26, 2018, at Rhoda Goldman Plaza in San Francisco, California, after a long illness.

He was born in Milwaukee on July 27, 1931 to Helen (Hochberger) and Herman Wiesner, and graduated from North Division High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army and saw combat in the Korean War. In 1953 he married Lola Magar. For many years he worked in his family’s delicatessen, Wiesner’s Food Shop, in Shorewood, and all his life was highly knowledgeable and passionate about food.

He is survived by his wife, Lola, and son Steven (Paul Reidinger) both of San Francisco, cousins Leonard (Casey) Riskin of Chicago, Jerry (Valorie) Kohn of Mequon, Ardith (Michael) Crampton of West Hartford, Connecticut, Janice Kohn of West Hurley, New York, Adica Dubovy of Rockaway, New Jersey, Allen Berger of Savannah, Georgia, Helen Kovacic of Slovakia, Julia (Carl) Dubovy of Chester, New Jersey, and many friends and other relatives. Donations in his memory can be made to the Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation, 1400 N Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202 and to Rhoda Goldman Plaza, 2180 Post Street, San Francisco, CA 94115.

Jean Zembrosky

Jean Zembrosky of Milwaukee died July 2, 2018. She was 88.

She was born April 3, 1930 in Dallas.

Jean was predeceased by spouse Marvin L Zembrosky in 2005. Jean was a homemaker and is survived by children Jeff (Kate Sloane) Zembrosky of Bayside; Diane Zembrosky of Minnetonka, Minnosota; Caryn (Jeff Herman) Zembrosky of Minnetonka, among others.

Burial was at Second Home Cemetery in July 4, 2018, with Blane Goodman Funeral Services. Memorial contributions are welcome to Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin or Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Wisconsin.
