Ambassador on nationalism
“Nationalism Then and Now: A Discussion with Former Ambassador Andrew H. Schapiro.” Ambassador Andrew Schapiro will explore his mother’s story of immigration from Czechoslovakia to the United States in 1939. She was left as a small child in Prague and was later reunited with her parents in the United States, although most of her family did not get out. Seven decades later, Schapiro was appointed to serve as the representative for the country that saved his mother in the country which she escaped. In his role as ambassador, Schapiro witnessed the return of populism and nationalism in the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe and will address these contemporary challenges. Craft workshop
Jewish Museum Milwaukee hosts a craft workshop. Create your own fashion-forward, hand-printed silk scarf with Project Runway alumni Miranda Levy. Learn the craft of repeating patterns with wood blocks using traditional Indian patterns. Levy has been a featured artist in several fashion and art shows throughout Milwaukee. Family tells survivor story
Steve Russek and Elaine Culbertson will share the story of how Russek’s desire to better tell his mother’s story led both of them to discover family connections which spanned decades. “Camp Sisters – Lager Shvester” program, organized by the Nathan & Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center of Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will take place at 7 p.m. on July 17 at Congregation Shalom, 7630 N. Santa Monica Blvd. It is a story of two young women named Dora who survived Auschwitz‑Birkenau, in part, by finding friendship, hope and courage. Behind the Seams
“Behind the Seams” features Margaret Hasek-Guy, who devoted hours to interpreting and printing three different fabric patterns designed by Hedy Strnad and seen in the dress designs on display at Stitching Histories from the Holocaust. She explains the techniques of transforming drawings of dress patterns into actual fabric yardage through the technique of screen-printing.
Takes place on a “Third Thursday” of the month, when Jewish Museum Milwaukee is open late, until 7 p.m. Hasek-Guy presentation begins at 5:30 p.m., July 19. Registration not required.

Latino immigration issues
“Contemporary Issues in Latino Immigration with LULAC’s Darryl Morin.” Darryl D. Morin, the immediate past National League of United Latin American Citizen’s (LULAC) Midwest vice president and current state secretary, will address contemporary immigration issues, legislation and policy affecting the Latino community, and the local and global implications.
Morin has been working on the issue of immigration reform nationally for over 15 years. The sixth Annual Founder’s Day at the Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear is July 29. Diaspora in China
“Diaspora in China: Jewish Refugees in Shanghai 1938-1950” is an event by Jewish Museum Milwaukee, set for Aug. 7, 7 p.m. From 1938 to 1941, at least 17,000 German and Austrian Jewish refugees and more than 2,000 Polish Jews fled from the Nazi terror to Shanghai, China. The refugees hoped to use Shanghai as a temporary waiting room for their transfer to North America. Assistant professor of German at University of Wisconsin – Madison, Weijia Li, will explore how the Jewish exile in Shanghai promoted the interaction among various Jewish communities in China.
