Mandolin at Shalom

Congregation Shalom is holding “Summer Evenings: A Musical Kaleidoscope,” a series of free concerts. On July 6, 8 p.m., the New Vintage Frets will share their mandolin sounds, offering music from the early 1900s. Congregation Shalom, 7630 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point. 414-352-9288.

On July 11, Ambassador Andrew Schapiro will explore his mother’s story of immigration from Czechoslovakia to the United States in 1939.

Ambassador on nationalism

“Nationalism Then and Now: A Discussion with Former Ambassador Andrew H. Schapiro.” Ambassador Andrew Schapiro will explore his mother’s story of immigration from Czechoslovakia to the United States in 1939. She was left as a small child in Prague and was later reunited with her parents in the United States, although most of her family did not get out. Seven decades later, Schapiro was appointed to serve as the representative for the country that saved his mother in the country which she escaped. In his role as ambassador, Schapiro witnessed the return of populism and nationalism in the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe and will address these contemporary challenges. Craft workshop

Jewish Museum Milwaukee hosts a craft workshop. Create your own fashion-forward, hand-printed silk scarf with Project Runway alumni Miranda Levy. Learn the craft of repeating patterns with wood blocks using traditional Indian patterns. Levy has been a featured artist in several fashion and art shows throughout Milwaukee. In 2013 Levy was selected as a contestant on the Lifetime television production, “Project Runway,” season 12. All supplies included. Museum members $32. Non-members $42. RSVP only, no walk-ins. Family tells survivor story

Steve Russek and Elaine Culbertson will share the story of how Russek’s desire to better tell his mother’s story led both of them to discover family connections which spanned decades. “Camp Sisters – Lager Shvester” program, organized by the Nathan & Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center of Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will take place at 7 p.m. on July 17 at Congregation Shalom, 7630 N. Santa Monica Blvd. It is a story of two young women named Dora who survived Auschwitz‑Birkenau, in part, by finding friendship, hope and courage. Behind the Seams

“Behind the Seams” features Margaret Hasek-Guy, who devoted hours to interpreting and printing three different fabric patterns designed by Hedy Strnad and seen in the dress designs on display at Stitching Histories from the Holocaust. She explains the techniques of transforming drawings of dress patterns into actual fabric yardage through the technique of screen-printing.

Takes place on a “Third Thursday” of the month, when Jewish Museum Milwaukee is open late,  until 7 p.m. Hasek-Guy presentation begins at 5:30 p.m., July 19. Registration not required.

Tisha b’Av in Waukesha

A Tisha b’Av service and discussion will be held Sunday, July 22 at Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha. Cantor Deborah Martin, the spiritual leader at CEEW, will lead the program. Latino immigration issues

“Contemporary Issues in Latino Immigration with LULAC’s Darryl Morin.” Darryl D. Morin, the immediate past National League of United Latin American Citizen’s (LULAC) Midwest vice president and current state secretary, will address contemporary immigration issues, legislation and policy affecting the Latino community, and the local and global implications.

Morin has been working on the issue of immigration reform nationally for over 15 years.  He will share his insight on why our nation has failed to fix our broken immigration system, and on the serious consequences. JCC Music festival

Founder’s Day

The sixth Annual Founder’s Day at the Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear is July 29. Includes live 50s-60s music, ComedySportz, Adam Levin’s Old Milwaukee slideshow, the Wheelmen (vintage high wheelers), hobbyist and antique exhibitors and barbequed food, beer, soda, a cooking demonstration as well as other activities. The Chudnow Museum’s mission is to promote public awareness and appreciation of the heritage of Milwaukee. Adults $6. Diaspora in China

“Diaspora in China: Jewish Refugees in Shanghai 1938-1950” is an event by Jewish Museum Milwaukee, set for Aug. 7, 7 p.m. From 1938 to 1941, at least 17,000 German and Austrian Jewish refugees and more than 2,000 Polish Jews fled from the Nazi terror to Shanghai, China. The refugees hoped to use Shanghai as a temporary waiting room for their transfer to North America. Assistant professor of German at University of Wisconsin – Madison, Weijia Li, will explore how the Jewish exile in Shanghai promoted the interaction among various Jewish communities in China. Federation annual meeting

The community is invited to attend the Milwaukee Jewish Federation Annual Meeting 2018 on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Congregation Sinai, 8223 N. Port Washington Road in Fox Point. Free and open to all. A reception with desserts and wine (dietary laws observed) begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program from 7:15-8:15 pm. Alcoholics Anonymous

An international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. Meetings are held at multiple times and locations around the city, including 7 p.m. Monday night, Chabad-Lubavitch, 3901 N. Lake Drive, Milwaukee. Breast cancer support

Breast cancer patients, their families and friends are matched with professionally trained breast cancer survivors and co-survivors. All connections are personalized and based on similar diagnoses, treatment plans and circumstances. Services are free and begin with a phone conversation. ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis supports both patients and survivors. Friendship House Fellowship

A support group for Jewish men and women in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other substances. Requirements for membership are participation in a 12-step program (such as AA or Narcotics Anonymous) and a desire to recover. Meetings are Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at The Shul, 3901 N. Lake Drive in Milwaukee.

Jewish Family Services

Outpatient mental health services to people dealing with personal problems and mental health issues. Contact 414-390-5800. JFS is located at 1300 N. Jackson St., Milwaukee.

Jewish Grief Group

The Jewish Grief Group, under the auspices of Jewish Family Services, is open to all. Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m. It rotates among local synagogues. Call Jewish Family Services, 414-390-5800, to register.

SPARK! memory loss program

SPARK! is a program for people experiencing memory loss and their care partners. Jewish Museum Milwaukee holds SPARK! events at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month in partnership with Ovation Communities.
