Nita Corré, matriarch to Jewish Home, dies at 80

MILWAUKEE – Nita Levy Corré, former president of Ovation Jewish Home, died at the home on May 25, 2018. She was 80.

Corré served the home in different roles for decades under its prior name, the Jewish Home and Care Center.

She was in her 20s when she began volunteering at the old Milwaukee Jewish Home on 50th Street. She later became its executive director, just when the home moved to its present Prospect Avenue site.

Corré had been president of both the Jewish Home and Care Center and its foundation until the two functions were separated in 2003. Corré then became president of the foundation.

Ovation Communities issued a statement calling Corré its “forever inspirational matriarch.”

“She led our development of new services and expansion into independent and assisted living communities, all influenced by her vision of providing comfort, meaning, independence and dignity to our older adults,” according to the statement, which also lauds her loving and devoted nature. “Foreseeing the need for financial security, she established our Foundation and single-handedly developing resources, inspired by her passion and vision, which continue to provide for a quality Jewish environment for hundreds of older adults, every year, who otherwise may not be able to afford such care.”

Corré once said that whenever “things got tough in my office” during her years as president of the Jewish Home and Care Center, “I would go up to [speak with] the residents. That was important to me.”

Corré said she liked to refer to the residents of the home as “professors of life. The people who live in our facility make the Jewish community what it is today — they always have something to teach.”

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rabbi Dr. Alan D. Corré. Loving mother of Dr. Giselle (Dr. Jon Mukand), Jacob, Raquel (Dr. Darryl Pure) and Isaac (Diana Newman) Corré. Proud grandmother of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Loli (Rabbi Refoel) Berisch, Rabbi Abraham (Estelle) Levy, James (Hilda) Levy and the late Solomon (Sarah) Levy.

A funeral service was Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Ovation Jewish Home, with interment at Agudas Achim Cemetery in Cudahy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Ovation Jewish Home are appreciated.
